As dinner progressed, the conversation inevitably turned to business. Ann, a master at compartmentalizing her emotions when needed, led the discussion with a precision that belied the turmoil inside her.

"We believe this project has the potential to redefine the market," Ann said, her voice steady as she outlined the innovative aspects of their proposal. "And with strategic partnerships, we can ensure a sustainable and profitable future."

Jacob nodded, clearly impressed. "Your vision is ambitious, Ms. Aegon. I can see the passion you have for this project."

Ann continued, discussing metrics and forecasts, but her words felt hollow in her ears. Her gaze studiously avoided Beth, who remained silent throughout, her presence like a shadow at the feast.

The more Jacob spoke of futures and plans, the more Ann felt the past clawing at her, demanding recognition. She felt like an actor in a play where everyone knew their lines but her.

As the first course was served, Jacob picked up a delicacy with his hand and offered it to Beth.

"Beth, you have to try this," he said, his tone light and encouraging.

Beth's reaction was minimal but telling. She offered him a polite smile but declined the offer with a small shake of her head. "Thank you, but I'll stick with this," she murmured, gesturing to her own plate.

Jacob chuckled and shrugged, dismissing the moment with an ease that Ann found both infuriating and heartbreaking. He turned his attention back to the guests, unaware of the silent agony his simple action had inflicted.

"Ann, your team's proposal was one of the most detailed we've seen in a while," Jacob said, redirecting the conversation to safer waters.

Ann nodded, grateful for the shift. "We believe in thoroughness, Mr. Smith. Every detail counts when it comes to groundbreaking projects like these," she replied, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her.

As they moved through the courses, Jacob was effusive in his praise and curiosity about their work. "I'm looking forward to working with you, Miss Aegon. Your vision for the project aligns perfectly with our goals."

Ann responded with professional courtesy, though her words carried an undertone of pain only Beth could detect. "Thank you, Mr. Smith. It's always exciting to work with someone who understands the potential impact of these initiatives."

Jacob, enthusiastic about the synergy he perceived, leaned in, gesturing with his fork. "Absolutely, and it's that blend of vision and thoroughness that I value. In business, as in life, the foundation of any successful venture is faithfulness and trust, don't you think?"

Ann paused, her fork halfway to her mouth, and then placed it down gently. She looked directly at Jacob, but her gaze sharply shifted to Beth, locking eyes with her for a fleeting, charged moment.

"Absolutely, Mr. Smith," Ann said, her voice carrying a weight that belied the casual nature of the conversation. "Faithfulness and trust are the cornerstones. Without them, everything else can fall apart quite unexpectedly. It's about more than just business contracts and agreements; it's about knowing that the person across from you will honor their commitments, even when the path isn't easy."

Jacob nodded, missing the subtext, as he replied, "Well said. It's that level of understanding that turns good partnerships into great ones."

Ann's gaze lingered on Beth a moment longer, a silent message conveyed in her eyes before she turned back to Jacob. "Indeed," she continued, "and sometimes, the true test of those values isn't found in the easy times but in the moments when faithfulness and trust are challenged the most. It's how we respond in those moments that defines the integrity of our partnerships."
