Chapter 25 - One kiss only

The room is furnished with a few objects, all in shades of red. It feels like you're in a museum, rather than a restaurant.
The buzz in the background, made up of chatter and laughter, can't distract me from looking at the girl who has bewitched my heart.
I feel overwhelmed by emotions that come in regular waves, every time I think about what's happening.
It was all so fast and unexpected, totally unexpected, that I only now realize that I was truly unprepared to deal with all of this.
What the fuck do I know about being with someone? I mean, how to behave in a couple.
My parents split up years ago, nothing dramatic since they spent very little time together, even when we all lived under the same roof.
They are great parents, but I have no point of reference when it comes to relationships.
My friends change girls like you would change a pair of socks. The only one who seems to be serious is Felix, but he too is very fickle and even his latest relationship could burn like a flash in the pan again.

"You look at her like you want to eat her!" An amused laugh brings me back to reality.
I turn to Kad who smiles, biting her lips.
I look down, caught out. I can't deny the evidence.
"Do you like her, huh?" She whispers, also looking towards Jo.
I'm not the type who likes to confide in the first person who comes by and I know perfectly well how fragile and delicate our situation is at the moment. We decided to be together but it's all a big question mark. It's kind of a secret relationship we have. Exciting, from a certain point of view but also oppressive, since I would like to shout to the world that we are together!

I don't answer her, I take my time eating a piece of pizza that I have on my plate.
She continues to smile at me amusedly and I look for something that can divert the conversation to other topics.
When she insisted on sitting next to me, I feared she was going to shamelessly hit on me, as she almost always does when she's around.
Instead, incredibly, she turned out to be calm and fun. No clingy or pushy behavior. This made me relax quite a bit.
I can't stand clingy people and I don't even like having to be a little rude or unfriendly to make them stop acting as if I were an object to be conquered.
Don't get me wrong, attention pleases everyone. What bothers me is the feeling of having no escape, as if I were trapped.

"She's very pretty!" Kad also takes something from her plate, diverting her attention to the food for a moment.
I have no idea what she wants to know, exactly. A confession? She will never have it. She can forget it. I'm very good at keeping secrets.
I promised Jo we would be discreet, otherwise we wouldn't sit so far away from each other.
It feels like she's at the other end of the room, rather than at the same table as me! I can't even talk to her.
We seriously exaggerated! Next time we'll have to revisit this distance story. And to think it was my idea!
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid!

I nod absentmindedly as I continue to eat.
I can't think of anything that isn't Jo. My eyes constantly search hers as I watch her laugh with Sam and Shane.

Shane. He is always with her. I don't think he has any misunderstood attitudes, but he really is always with Jo.
I'll have to investigate.

And Dylan? He literally dies behind her. He has heart-shaped eyes when they talk and sometimes I even saw him blush when she gave him a compliment. Not to mention that he actually told me openly that he likes her!
If we want to be honest, Pia also looks at her in ecstasy.
I can't blame any of them. Jo has something that makes her irresistible and elusive at the same time. It's as if it were a magnet that attracts everyone's attention.
Including mine. Especially mine!

Her eyes meet mine and a smile comes to her face.
I smile reflexively, without realizing it.

"I'm jealous!"
I blink quickly, turning to Kad.
She is jealous? Did I hear correctly?
"You're not talking to me but when you two look at each other, you say a million things to each other!"
She pouts before bursting into laughter.
"Sorry, I must be a little tired!" I sigh. It's the only thing that comes to mind as I make a Herculean effort to look away.
A second later, I look for her again and find her, still smiling at me. She's definitely enjoying herself and I'm thinking of all the things I could say to her to make her enjoy herself even more.
I love it when she laughs. Especially if she laughs because of me!
