The rest of the night went by in a blur. Angel had sent the video of Wyatt and the Martinezs's conversation in the barn to the police and the filming crew before he went down the dungeon. Shortly after Leon and Angel lowered the victim from the cross, the police and the paramedics arrived on the scene.
The victim had been brutally tortured for days by the cultists, and there was barely any skin left on her under the white swathes. The paramedics carried her to an ambulance on a stretch while the police arrested the cult members and searched the dungeon. Some FBI agents also show up. One of them, Agent Kane, insisted on asking them endless and repetitive questions about what happened that night, to the point that Azazil was seriously contemplating twisting the annoying man's head off right then and there.
"Hey! That's enough questions!" A sharp, fiery female voice shot through the chaos and interrupted Agent Kane's questions. Leon and Azazil were astonished to see Chloe, their producer, marched through the cops, forensics, firefighters and paramedics on her Chanel high heels like a formidable warrior and went directly at Kane, "My two men solved a case that you didn't and just saved a victim from being burnt alive! And you don't even have the courtesy to let them rest before you begin your interrogation?"
"And who are you?"
"Chloe Kim! I am the Executive Producer of Exorcism Live." Chloe raised her chin and said, "If you want to talk to Father Solari and Mr. Lockwood, please make an appointment with my assistant. Thank you. Now, I will take my boys home."
Agent Kane chuckled at her imperial demeanour and said, "I will be in touch then. Thank you for your cooperation."
"Chloe, why are you here?" Leon asked once Agent Kane finally left them alone.
"How can I not be here after seeing what happened this morning...I meant yesterday morning. Gosh, it's already 5 o'clock! Let me take you two back to catch some rest." She hastily ushered Leon and Azazil into her car, driving them back to the hotel.
As the car drove past the gate and merged onto Red Rock Road, Leon turned back and took another look at the farm, and a cold shiver went down his spine. There, above the police-beacon-lit farm, hovered an enormous humanoid shadow. At first, it was almost indiscernible against the dark navy blue sky, but one couldn't unsee it once they noticed the giant void in the sky, as if the firmament had been ripped open. Its crooked limbs spread like spider legs, surrounding a disproportionately big abdomen. Countless long, thin, wire-like tendrils burst from its belly like a spider web, covering the entire Hawthorne Valley.
The Mother...she was still here. Merely stopping the ritual was not enough. He had to exorcize her for good. Leon thought.
But how should he sever the connection between the archdemon and everyone she had latched herself to? As far as the historical record went, no one had ever successfully exorcized her before.
Perhaps he should ask his mentor for help.
The drive back was not as quiet as Leon had hoped. Chloe scolded them the entire journey for being reckless and crazy, sneaking into a murder farm in the middle of the night without backup. She only stopped when she had to drink some water after her voice cracked from too much talk.
And then Angel spoke for the first time since they entered the car.
"By the way, I got the tape."
"Tape?" Chloe glanced back at him through the rear mirror. "What tape?"
"The ones the cultists recorded when they streamed their ritual. I removed the SD card from one of the cameras before the police came. I figured one copy of the recording should be good enough for them."
