I wouldn't say no to ice cream.

Tim and Lucy were cuddling and binge-watching a show they chose after 20 minutes of negotiation. Only Tim was watching because she was asleep against him. The week was rough. And even if she was sleeping, Tim was enjoying the moment. It took them months to get back to this. He was about to switch off the TV when his phone rang, waking up Lucy at the same time.

T: Yes? Ok, don't move. Send me the address; be there in 20.

And when he hung up, Tim was already on his feet, ready to go. Half awake, Lucy looked at him.

L: Sense of déjà vu.
T: Luce.. I'm coming back, I swear. Trust me.

She nodded; he kissed her forehead and left the apartment. She wanted to trust him, really, but what if it all happened again?

Twenty minutes later, Tim parked his car in front of a house. The music was too loud; some people were too drunk and maybe too high. And then he spotted her and sat on the sidewalk, her arms around her knees. He crossed the street and joined her. She saw him and stood up, relieved.

T: Tamara Are you okay? What happened?
Ta : I am now. Can we just go? Please ?
T: Look at me. Who hurt you?
Ta: It doesn't matter.
T: Of course it matters. Tamara ?
Ta : Not today; not now, please. Can we just leave?
T: Come on, kiddo.

His cop's eyes saw something, but he didn't want to push her. She, apparently, was not ready to talk. For him, it was hard to juggle between the sergeant he was and Tim.

T: You're hungry?
Ta: I wouldn't say no to ice cream.

He smiled and drove right to the beach, where he knew he could find the best ice cream in town at nearly midnight. Twenty minutes later, they were sitting on the bench outside, in front of the sea. She was silent; it was unusual for her. And he couldn't stop looking at her. She was sad; he was sure she had cried, and a bruise shattered on her wrist.

Ta: I broke up with my boyfriend, or maybe he did. We were together for six months. I was not ready yet to... you know? The next "big step", but he finally found a solution. I caught them tonight. He was drunk, so our discussion was a total mess. It was a hard conversation, not because I was deeply in love with him but because he betrayed me. I caught them while they were, you know, well. He tried to apologize, but come on, man, you are half naked and the girl you are with is totally naked. What are you saying? I yelled at him, and he yelled at me. He grabbed my wrist, as you can see, and threw me out. He really scared me, and I called you. I'm sorry..
T: You did well with your phone call. What's the boy's name?
Ta: Tim. It's nothing. Please.
T: You know Lucy will ask you the same?
Ta: And what are you going to do? Cuff him? For a bruise and a breakup? Or maybe you want to scare him in a dark alley?
T: Maybe don't give me ideas.. Tam?
Ta: Yes?
T: Why did you call me instead of Lucy?
Ta: Your name came to mind first.
T: Oh, hm, ok. You're coming home with me.
Ta: I'm ok, Tim. I can go back to my place.
T: No, you're not okay. You just found out your boyfriend cheated on you; you broke up, not in a good way. I'm not the better person to have the comfort talk, and I know that after I told Lucy everything, she will want to talk with you. It was not an open question.
Ta: Tim? Thank you.
T: For what?
Ta: You came.
T: I will always.

Forty minutes later, they were back at the apartment. After he gave her everything she needed, Tim closed his bedroom door, took off his clothes, and joined Lucy underneath the sheets.

"You're back," she said when she felt his warm body against her back, his arm around her waist, and his breath against her skin. "I told you," he answered before kissing her neck. She turned over to face and kissed him. He came back.

L: Who called you?
T: Tam
L: Wait, what? Where is she?
T: Sleeping on the couch
L: What happened? Why did she call?
T: She caught her boyfriend with someone else. She wanted to wait before having sex with him, but he found another solution. They had a fight. He grabbed his wrist and threw her out. She was scared, and she called me.
L: Do you have his name?
T: I told her you would ask the same question. Listen, she didn't want to go further. It's her choice. She is OK. I mean, as okay as she could be in that situation.
L: Hm.. What did you do?
T: We went for ice cream. And I brought her home with me. She will probably need you tomorrow; girls talk and everything. You will be better than me.
L: You did good you know... You love her, hm?
T: She's family
L: Not what I asked Bradford.
T: I love you.
L: So you love her.. Did you really talk about sex with her?
T: No, she used "the next big step." Is she old enough to have a boyfriend? Did you know?
L: Know what? She was dating boys? Yeah. You will be such a pain in the ass if, one day, we have a girl. Poor baby...
T: Enough. Time to sleep...
L: Hm hm. Come here.

It took her five minutes to fall asleep against him. He couldn't stop thinking of his relationship with Tamara. He made fun of Lucy when Tamara became Lucy's puppy. But was she only hers? By extension, Tamara was his too. He watched her grow and become the woman she was. She was family, and she will always have a home with him too. Of course, he loved her.
