"Umm... are you alright?"
Nayeon froze at the sound of the voice, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew what voice that was, but she didn't want to believe it. Turning around slowly, her eyes widened in shock as she saw Jeongyeon standing behind her.
"Na.. Nay.. Nay-on, right?" It hasn't been at least 5 hours since the wedding and Jeongyeon had already forgotten her name, so she tried guessing it, her eyes were scanning Nayeon's face for any sign of recognition.
Nayeon couldn't help but giggle at Jeongyeon. She then realized what she was doing and quickly covered her mouth to stop herself from giggling much more. Clearing her throat, she faked a small cough to regain her composure.
"It's.. it's Nayeon," she said, "But you were close."
Jeongyeon's eyes lit up with a friendly smile. "Nayeon! Of course, I'm sorry about that. I should have remembered."
Nayeon shook her head, her smile gentle. "It's okay, really. It happens."
Nayeon and Jeongyeon stood facing each other in the washroom. The air between them was thick with awkward silence. Nayeon could feel her heart pounding in her chest, and she tried to avoid making eye contact.
Jeongyeon was the first to break the silence. "Are you alright?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. "You look a little sick."
Nayeon's mind raced. She couldn't let Jeongyeon know how she was really feeling. She had to come up with something, anything, to cover up the truth. "No, I'm fine," she replied quickly.
"Really? 'Cause I saw you earlier walking around the venue for awhile now." Jeongyeon said.
"So she did follow me on purpose.." Nayeon thought to herself. "But should I be mad at her? I mean.. it didn't seem like she was purposely trying to follow me.. but what if.."
Nayeon was still thinking to herself without realizing that Jeongyeon was still waiting for an answer. trying to come up with a lie, "I just... I think I ate something bad earlier. My stomach has started feeling weird." She said.
Jeongyeon's eyes narrowed slightly, but she didn't push further. "Are you sure? You don't have to pretend if you're not feeling well."
Nayeon forced a smile, trying to make it seem convincing. "Really, it's nothing. I'll be okay." She took a deep breath, hoping it would calm her racing heart. She wanted to get away from Jeongyeon as soon as possible, but she couldn't make it obvious.
Jeongyeon and Nayeon stood awkwardly once again, the two women hadn't said much since they found themselves alone in the confined space, and the silence between them was growing heavier with each second.
Jeongyeon, on the other hand, was equally uncomfortable as Nayeon. She didn't understand why she felt so nervous around Nayeon, but there was a nagging feeling in the back of her mind that told her that she wanted to talk to her more, even if she couldn't understand why. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other.
Finally, Jeongyeon took a deep breath and spoke up, "Nayeon," she began, catching the other woman's gaze, "I want to talk to you more." This made Nayeon in shock "Talk to me more?" she said to herself.
"I want to get to know you more, since we are in both in the same friend group." she told her.
Nayeon felt her stomach actually fell weird. She wasn't ready for having a conversation now, not like this. But as much as she wanted to run away, she knew she couldn't. She couldn't bring herself to reject Jeongyeon, especially when she saw the sincerity in her eyes. So, she swallowed hard and nodded. "Okay," she replied quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jeongyeon's expression softened slightly, relieved that Nayeon was willing to listen. She didn't know exactly what she wanted to say, but she knew she had to start somewhere. "Can we... go somewhere else?" she asked, glancing around the washroom. "This isn't exactly the best place for a 'get to know each other' conversation."
Nayeon chuckled before nodding again. "Sure," she agreed. Even though her mind was screaming at her, she also wanted to at least try to be 'chill'. She didn't trust herself to speak much more, afraid that her voice might betray the storm of emotions swirling inside her.
As Jeongyeon and Nayeon stepped out of the washroom, the noise of the venue hit them once again, making Nayeon flinch slightly. The loud chatter and music echoed around them, but it all felt distant to Nayeon. Her focus was on Jeongyeon, and only Jeongyeon, who was walking beside her with a calm expression.
Jeongyeon glanced at Nayeon, noticing her discomfort. She paused for a moment, leaning in closer so she could be heard over the noise. "It's really loud out here," Jeongyeon said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We should find somewhere quieter to talk?"
Nayeon's heart raced. Being alone with Jeongyeon even longer, especially after everything that had happened, made her anxious. She had hoped someone else would join them, but it was just the two of them now. Still, she nodded, not wanting to refuse Jeongyeon's request.
They walked together, searching for a quiet spot. The sound of their footsteps echoed in the hallway as they moved away from the main event. Nayeon felt a knot in her stomach tighten with each step, but she tried to keep calm. She wasn't sure what Jeongyeon wanted to talk about, and the uncertainty was making her uneasy.
Finally, they found a small, empty room at the end of the hall. Jeongyeon opened the door and gestured for Nayeon to enter first. The room was dimly lit, with a soft glow from a lamp in the corner. Inside, was a mini fridge, a couch, and a karaoke machine connected to a TV.
Nayeon hesitated at the doorway, feeling a wave of nerves wash over her. She took a deep breath and stepped inside, followed closely by Jeongyeon, who quietly closed the door behind them. The room was silent, the noise from the venue now just a faint sound in the background.
Nayeon turned to face Jeongyeon, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel her palms starting to sweat, and she quickly wiped them on her dress, hoping Jeongyeon wouldn't notice. Jeongyeon walked over to a small couch and sat down, looking up at Nayeon.
"Come sit," Jeongyeon said softly, patting the space next to her.
Nayeon hesitated for a moment before slowly making her way over. She sat down, leaving a small gap between them, and clasped her hands in her lap to stop them from shaking. The silence stretched on, and Nayeon felt like it was suffocating her. She wanted to say something, anything, but her mind was blank.
Jeongyeon looked at her, her expression unreadable. "Looks like your feeling overwhelmed, huh?" she said, her voice gentle but direct. "Why don't I grab a few drinks for us" she insisted.
Nayeon nodded, she then saw Jeongyeon reaching out to open the mini fridge. She grabbed herself a coke and Nayeon a water bottle.
"Now let's get to know each other." Jeongyeon said to her.
