Morning light gently illuminated the room as I lay in bed, my mind racing with the revelations from yesterday. The news that Severus Snape had once been a Death Eater weighed heavily on me. I had never imagined that someone I respected and worked with could have such a dark past.
As I stared at the ceiling, questions swirled in my mind. Should I avoid Severus now that I knew about his past? Could I trust him, or should I maintain a professional distance? The uncertainty was overwhelming.
The Great Hall was bathed in the soft morning light that filtered through the enchanted ceiling. I entered, feeling a mix of apprehension and curiosity about the day ahead. As I walked to the staff table, I noticed Remus Lupin already seated and quietly enjoying his breakfast.
"Good morning, Remus," I greeted as I sat down across from him.
"Good morning (Y|N)," Remus responded with a warm but somewhat distracted smile.
I took a sip of my coffee, gathering my thoughts before speaking. "Have you seen the newspaper yesterday?"
Remus looked up, a hint of unease crossing his features. "No, I haven't had the chance yet. Why?"
I sighed and set the newspaper down on the table between us. "Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban."
Remus's face momentarily tightened, but he quickly masked his reaction. "That's... unsettling news," he said, his voice steady but lacking its usual warmth. "It's been a while since he was mentioned."
I noticed the odd shift in his demeanor. "Yes, it is troubling. Given his history and the current state of affairs, I'm worried about what this might mean for the safety of everyone here."
Remus's eyes flickered to the newspaper before he quickly looked away. "We've dealt with threats before. The best we can do is stay vigilant and ensure the students are aware of the precautions we're taking."
I nodded, sensing that Remus was trying to steer the conversation away from Sirius. "Absolutely. But with Black on the loose, it's important we remain especially cautious."
Remus cleared his throat, attempting to change the subject. "Have you heard about the new developments in the Defense Against the Dark Arts curriculum? There are some promising updates that might benefit the students."
I caught the subtle shift in conversation, but chose not to press further. "I haven't, actually. What changes are being proposed?"
As Remus began discussing the curriculum updates, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to his reaction than he was letting on. His attempt to divert the topic was clear, but the unease in his voice and the fleeting expressions gave away a deeper concern.
Despite my lingering questions, I decided to focus on the matter at hand and engage in the discussion about the curriculum. But as we spoke, the strange shift in Remus's behavior lingered in my mind, casting a shadow over what was meant to be a simple breakfast.
After the strange breakfast, I made my way back to my classroom, the weight of our conversation lingering in my mind. As I approached my desk, a sense of unease settled over me. I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something crucial I was missing.
Just as I began to organize my lesson plans, the door swung open, and Professor McGonagall entered, her expression grave.
"(Y/N)," she said, her tone urgent. "I need to inform you that Draco Malfoy has been injured."
I felt a jolt of concern. "Injured? How?"
"During today's Care of Magical Creatures lesson," McGonagall explained, "Draco was attacked by a hippogriff named Buckbeak. He's currently in the hospital wing."
