Harry and I were on the plane early the next morning. We had left a note with the Cullens to tell them where we were going and asked to not be followed. Harry had managed to hide my thoughts along with his own from Edward using his own mind reading skills. Like a reverse mind reading sort of thing.
The plane ride was long and boring. Using the Cullen's money, we were on first class, yet I was still unamused. And Harry and I hadn't really thought over the whole blood situation. We were new at being vegetarians, so the constant human breathing, especially in a smaller space, was excruciating.
Yet, somehow, we managed to make it off the plain, through the airport, and out to a secluded forest where we could hunt. The buildings of Italy were towering above us as we exited the forest.
Actually, Harry and I hadn't thought about this at all. What were we supposed to do, strut right into the Volturi castle unannounced? And what of all the other factors? Would we even be welcome? Were Renesmee and Jacob already there, taken prisoner or dead? Or were they still wondering Italy? Maybe they didn't even take plane and just ran there. If that was true, it's possible that they weren't even here yet.
"Charlie." Harry said. "This was sort of dumb."
"We couldn't just stand around. Who knows what the Volturi are going to do? Maybe they'll punish them for standing up for Sue, or something..." I replied, knowing I sounded stupid.
"That's not like them."
"The whole reason that they came here was because we didn't want them coming here. Sue couldn't make the trip with her newborn urges, so they decided to go on their own. The whole reason we're here is to protect them. Jacob may not age, but if he did, he would only be 21, and Renesmee is barely 3. Sure, she's very wise, but she will go above and beyond to protect us and that's not something that we can risk."
"You have a point." Harry said. "So, what should we do?"
"Go pay Aro a little visit." I said, walking towards the tall Volturi castle. It was night time and no one was about to see us stalk towards the castle, slowly approaching.
I stepped inside the castle. The instant I was inside, I could hear the piercing screams of a human's blood being drank by Jane. I could smell the blood spilling into her mouth. I could hear her soft moans as she salivated. I could feel the pounding of the innocent human's heart.
I took one deep breath, and knew that I couldn't resist. I ran to where the feast was going on, immediately attacking the human without even bothering to push Jane out of the way.
"Charlie!" Exclaimed Jane. She watched as I drank, desperate for the taste of blood in my mouth. It had only been a few weeks that I had been a vegetarian, but it was much too long. I drank and drank, going on the the next human and next human until the room was empty and the Volturi guard were left unsatisfied.
"Seems that you have been hungry, Charlie." Aro said, his voice chilling.
"It's been a few weeks." I replied, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand.
"A few weeks? You really don't have control, do you? You're four years old, yet you have the control of a newborn. I'm surprised that the Cullens even bothered."
"Bella is with the Cullens. I go where Bella goes." I replied.
"Oh, that's too bad. I was hoping to have you back on the guard. You have been missed. Hasn't he, Jane?"
Jane scowled. She never really liked me.
"No, I..." I bowed my head, knowing that his words were true. I was week. I had only been a few weeks without human blood, and I cracked at the smell of blood when I was 20 stories from where they had been feeding. Maybe Aro was right. Why should the Cullens even bother? I was like a rambunctious child that can't be controlled.
"Will you come back, Charlie? Maybe if you did, you could have a say in the fate of your granddaughter." Aro said.
I looked at him and hissed. "Where's Renesmee and Jacob?"
"Relax. They're both okay and they're just in the back room."
"Why would you want to hurt them? They did nothing wrong." I pleaded.
"I know that they did nothing wrong. But I don't like it very much that they were sent, instead of the vampire werewolf coming herself."
"She can't come herself. She can't risk being seen or getting close to a human. She's just a newborn. She can't control herself on a plane. When she's in her wolf form, she has no thirst, but it's not like she can just walk here as a wolf." I replied.
"Then why didn't you guys just wait for us to come? We would come by in our own sweet time. Them coming makes me think that you guys are hiding something from me. The Cullens wouldn't do that, right?" Aro uttered.
"They were just trying to protect the rest of us... There were worries that you wouldn't be accepting of Sue and that you would attack. The Cullens were being way too cautious about the whole thing and you could kill us all. They acted on their own accord and came here. Believe me, we had no idea. They were rather tricky." I replied.
Aro looked at me and reached his hand out towards me. I knew that he wanted to read my mind. I placed my hand on top of his and he read my mind, hearig every thought that i have ever had.
"Okay." Aro said, pulling his hand away. "But we're still low on information about the whole vampire and werewolf thing."
"I've shown you what I know, and Renesmee and Jacob don't know anymore. Please, let them go. I beg you."
"If I can have you back." Aro said.
I stared at Aro. "Are you blackmailing me?"
"I need you back in my guard, Charlie. You and Harry were great... Lethal."
"Aro, the Volturi are supposed to be good. They're supposed to protect the race of vampires. This isn't really what I would call good."
"That doesn't matter to me anymore." Aro replied. "The Volturi have always been about keeping our race a secret. But now, it's more than that. It's about taking the Cullens down."
I gawked at him, finally understanding what this was about. Aro wanted to take the Cullens down. Probably because of it's large size. Aro wanted to take down the attention on them.
"W-What? No!" I yelled.
"Aro." Jane said, getting his attention. The wolf is trying to escape."
"Do what you need to do." Aro replied, waving it off like it was a small, insignificant bug.
I braced myself, and suddenly I heard the loud scream of Jacob. I winced and closed my eyes, willing for it to stop. I waited and waited, and it must've been several minutes before Jane finally stopped her unrelenting torture.
"Jacob! Jacob!" I heard Renesmee call. I ran past the Volturi guard and into the back room where Jacob lay unconscious and Renesmee was leaning over him.
Renesmee looked up at me. Her half-human eyes were filled with tears and she called out my name, her voice sounding meek. "Grandpa?"
I ran over to her and held her in my arms, knowing that I would cry too if I had the ability. Jacob was still unconscious. I kept murmuring to her, "It'll be okay. He'll be okay. Everything will be okay. Nothing will happen." Yet, I couldn't bring myself to actually believe my words. Aro and the rest of his Volturi followers were out to kill my daughter's family. And now, I was one of the Cullens. Bella was my daughter and she had married Edward. Now I was one of the Cullens. Meaning that I was also fighting against Aro, and he would not kill my family.
The Volturi was going down. I would eliminate them myself if that's what it takes.
