OMINIS

The sound of snoring next to me indicated Sebastian had already fallen asleep atop his stack of textbooks. Kicking him swiftly under the desk, my boyfriend jolted awake at once.

"I warned you not to stay up too late reading that bloody book." I scolded him gently as he yawned loudly.

"Well I wouldn't have had to stay up so late reading if you hadn't been so distracting with that damn mouth of yours." Sebastian grumbled, and in response I gave him another swift kick under the table.

"I wouldn't have to resort to distraction if you would just let yourself relax." I replied as the chatter in the room grew louder as more students began to file into the classroom.

"I could say the same to you–oh there's the new girl." Sebastian trailed off at Asra's arrival. He didn't need to announce her appearance, as I could sense her presence from the moment she approached the classroom. It was the first thing I had noticed about her when she entered The Great Hall last night. The overwhelming magical aura radiating from her was unyielding–I hadn't sensed anyone, student or professor, with power like that in my four years at Hogwarts.

She was called over by Natsai almost immediately, which was unsurprising given her penchant for quickly making friends.

"Here! Behind you. There is an open seat here!" She called Asra.

"Thank you." Asra replied gratefully before taking a seat next to Natti. Unable to stave off my curiosity, I focused on their conversation as they sat together.

"Hello, I am Natti. So you are the new student." The Gryffindor introduced herself warmly. "Have you met Professor Ronan yet–" Before she could finish, the familiar laugh of the Charms professor sounded boisterously from the top of the stairwell leading to his office.

"Shall we begin?" The Professor chuckled before making his way down the stairs to his usual position at the front of the class. "Welcome to year five of Charms. Now, this will be a crucial year in your education on the art of charmwork, but I am confident that we will take hold with a passion and rigor requisite of such a challenge. Right?" The professor began his introduction. "Now, everyone please open your textbooks to page five-one-seven. But, before we begin, can anyone tell me the difference between the incantations of the color change and growth charms? Anyone?" An uncomfortable silence filled the classroom as no one seemed to recall the information we went over at the end of last year. The familiar rustling of pages indicated several students had attempted to flip through the textbook for the answer.

"Ah-ah-ah." Professor Ronan chided playfully, and with a snap the textbooks fell closed from view. "I am afraid it is too late to study now. My, the summer months must have really taken a toll on you all. By the looks of it, you spent your holidays practicing obliviate on one another!" The professor's attempt at humor was poorly received– no one bothered to even feign laughter. "Well, it seems we are in dire need of review!"

We spent the first half of the lesson reviewing summoning charms. Though tedious at first, the recollections slowly returned, and Professor Ronen quickly became pleased with our results.

"Accio!"

My attention was caught by Asra's immediate success at performing the summoning charm, and I couldn't help but wonder what wizarding school she had attended in the past.

"That was not bad!" Natsai complemented her.

"You are a swift learner indeed." Professor Ronen commented as well, making his way over to where I sensed the girls standing. "I see a lot of potential–but remember– potential is nothing without practice, keep at it, and you might just rival Miss Onai here. Alright everyone, that is enough of that. As you all seem to have the basics down and it is an exceptionally lovely day, I was thinking that we might have ourselves a little excursion outside for a spot of fresh air. After me!"
