After enduring several lectures from Ominis regarding my lack of hesitation in researching the dark arts, he seemed finally satisfied as my expression shifted to one of guilt at what marked hour two of his rantings. My gaze hardened against his as I fiercely gripped the letter I had received from Anne this morning. I wasn't going to apologize for my actions, but I did feel bad for the effect they had on him. I didn't intend to cause him pain or stress.
I was at war with myself every waking moment these days. Everytime I looked between him and Anne I was cleaved in two. I cannot abandon her to die from the effects of this curse, and that means I have to go against everything Ominis stands for.
I can't lose him.
And I can't lose my sister.
I will not sacrifice one to save the other.
I WILL have both.
I will have everything. Ominis will just have to bear with my methods until I find a way to save Anne. Then everything can go back to the way it was.
Before the arguing.
Before the fighting.
When things were simpler.
Devorak returned well past dinner, covered in blood. She had hurriedly reassured us that she was no longer injured, which did little to lessen my concern from the amount of scarlet staining her coat, and the hole torn through it.
She explained to us what she had discovered in the mine, and I was less than thrilled to learn that she had been accompanied by Amit of all bloody people, which certainly had resulted in her injury. Amit's skill was in counter curses and studying star charts, not combat. She wouldn't have been injured if I had been there to guard her back.
Dealing with goblins requires a firm hand.
What she described next sent a spark of hope flickering in my chest. After being injured, and as a last resort, she had been able to use her Ancient Magic to heal herself.
"I was desperate, and I figured if Isadora had theorized about it, then surely it had to be possible. She had so much more knowledge about this having been a Keeper." She continued her explanation. "I don't even know if it's something I could even repeat."
But if she could...
If her magic could truly heal...
Perhaps her magic could heal Anne, rid her of the pain plaguing her and restore her to the sister I missed so desperately.
"I should hope we don't have cause to require attempting it again." Ominis replied with a raised brow, as intrigued with the concept as I. "But if we find ourselves injured, it would certainly be worth looking into. You should mention it to Professor Fig, or maybe the Keepers. Perhaps they had witnessed Isadora use her magic for healing in the past that you have yet to learn about."
After we managed to get her cleaned up and into a set of fresh nightclothes, we spent the evening lounging in the bed, simply holding one another as she recounted more information she had learned about Professor Fig's wife. She sought our advice on whether she should propose the theory that Ranrok murdered Miriam to the professor.
