While Oliver was in Gotham, the official reason being to discuss his community center's budget with its primary benefactor, Wayne Enterprises while the real reason was that he was bringing the tech he'd recovered from Deadshot to Bruce's tech people for hacking skills, Laurel had decided to take a day off from her job at CNRI to have a mother daughter day with Jasmine.
Though right now, they were visiting Jasmine's Aunt Sara, who'd just gotten back in the country after being out on some deep cover op for her job with the FBI, though Sara never told her anything about it, since Laurel did not have proper security clearance. Laurel still couldn't believe that her party girl of a little sister was now working for the FBI and was getting married in a few weeks. Laurel had met Ava several times and she approved of her, since she felt that Ava was a good influence on Sara, a grounding influence, just like she liked to think that she was for Oliver.
"Thank you so much for letting us come over Sara. I know you probably are busy with wedding plans and all that." Laurel said with a smile as she watched Sara play with her niece.
"No, the wedding planning is nearly wrapped up, though Ava hasn't decided who she's picking as her maid of honor, since we both know the deal with her family." Sara said.
"Wait, don't tell me that Ava's parents aren't coming to the wedding?" Laurel asked, since she knew that Ava didn't get along with her parents, but she couldn't believe that Ava's parents would miss their daughter's wedding.
"Ava's parents are extremely old fashioned and borderline textbook homophobic. I'm still thankful that you, mom and dad didn't freak out when I came out to you guys." Sara said and Laurel smiled.
"I'm insulted you think we would. But I also think that mom and dad were relieved that they'd only have to deal with one unexpected pregnancy, since you and Ava literally can't get pregnant without planning in advance." Laurel said.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Ollie's lucky that mom and dad thought he was dead when you told them you were pregnant, otherwise you'd be a widow before you even said I do." Sara said and Laurel chuckled.
"But she was worth it. After we all lost Ollie, she became the main reason I got out of bed in the morning. If it weren't for Jasmine, I probably would've turned into an even bigger mess." Laurel said as she watched her sister play with her niece.
"You really are a natural with her Sara. After you and Ava get married, you should consider having kids of your own." Laurel said and Sara rolled her eyes at that.
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'm perfectly fine just being a cool aunt." Sara said.
"Whatever, but kids are in the eventual plans right?" Laurel asked.
"Yes, but Ava and I both want to wait until we've learned to balance our work with our marriage before we start considering that plunge. After all, having kids is one of those things that once you do it, you can't take it back." Sara said and Laurel nodded.
"I get it. But at least you and Ava can truly choose to have kids when you're ready, since neither of you can accidentally get the other one pregnant. You can truly plan your kids." Laurel said and Sara chuckled.
"True. But you and I both know you'd never trade Jasmine for anything." Sara said.
"You're right about that." Laurel said, right as her phone rang and she saw it was her boss.
"Sorry, I need to take this." Laurel said as she quickly walked to the side of the room and Sara watched her argue with her boss only to have her hang up, looking angry.
"Don't tell me you need to go into the office? I thought today was your day off?" Sara asked.
"So did I. But apparently the Somers trial is being moved up and my boss needs all hands on deck. No matter how much I need a day off." Laurel complained.
"Go, I'll watch the little monster, just make sure your boss remembers that he owes you time off after the case." Sara said.
"Oh believe me, I'm gonna make sure he knows he needs to make it up to me. Thank you for watching her Sara." Laurel said.
"My pleasure." Sara said as she hugged her sister.
"Jasmine sweetie, mommy got called into work, so you're gonna be hanging out with Auntie Sara for today, but I promise I'll be back as soon as I can." Laurel said, feeling bad she had to do this to her daughter, but she couldn't abandon her clients.
"Mommy has to go save the world?" Jasmine asked, since her aunt had always said that her mom was busy trying to save the world.
"Something like that. I promise I'll be back as soon as I can." Laurel said with a smile as she kissed her daughter's forehead before grabbing her purse and heading out to her car.
When Laurel arrived at her office, she was not happy to have to come into work on her day off, but she pushed it down, since she had a job to do.
However, she was surprised when she walked up to the office and saw all the lights were off and the door was locked.
"What the hell?" Laurel asked herself, only to have to duck as a bullet flew past her head.
"Damn it, I should've known this was a trap." Laurel said as she tried to make a break for her car, only for it to blow up and send her flying back.
"Damn it." Laurel said, especially when she saw that her phone was trashed and now she knew her only option was to play cat and mouse until she could find a phone and she was in serious pain from being thrown back into a wall. In fact, she was surprised she could even move, but she knew that she needed to keep moving until she could find some help. But it made her even gladder that she'd left her daughter with her federal agent sister, who she knew would keep Jasmine safe, but she really wished Oliver was here, because she could really use his archery skills right now, since while she had some hand to hand combat skills, she didn't think those skills would help her now, so all she could do was run before her assassin showed up.
"Sorry about this Lance, but you've been messing with some people you shouldn't be and you've ticked them off, which means you have to go and be lucky that it's you we're dealing with and not your daughter." the assassin said.
"You'd target my daughter? She's innocent and has nothing to do with this case." Laurel said.
"Which is why I chose to go after you directly instead of taking her to send a message." the assassin said as Laurel felt her anger grow and with it, she felt something inside her unlock.
"Never threaten my daughter." Laurel said, ending that last word with something unexpected. Suddenly, her throat seemed to expel some kind of huge sonic blast from her mouth, sending her assassin flying backwards.
"How did I do that?" Laurel asked, seeing her assassin was unconscious, right as she heard the police cars arrive, guessing that someone nearby called 911 after hearing the explosion from her car.
