Remus Lupin was sad, kind of.
The summer had ended, and with that ended the summer vacation. The four kids inhabiting his house were going back to their school. His son being one of those kids didn't help to reduce his sadness. For Remus, Jason was the best thing that ever happened to him. Although Jason wasn't his son by blood, he still loved the boy the same.
Last year was the year when Remus was happy throughout the 12 months. He managed to get a job at Hogwarts, stayed close to his son for the whole year, met his best friend's son, found out that his son liked someone, got reunited with another one of his best friends and then freed the said best friend.
That is probably why this year was harder than the ones before. He had to let go of Jason and Harry for almost a full year after spending so much of the summer with them.
"Have you finished packing, Harry?" Remus asked, poking his head inside Harry's room.
Harry and Jason were sitting inside, playing FIFA.
"Yes, Remus," Harry replied, his attention not shifting from the screen.
"What about you, Jason?"
"Yep," Jason replied, not looking away.
"And Hermione?"
"She's in the library," Jason replied. "Said she'd finished everything except for a few of her books and that she'd do it later tonight."
"Oh, alright then," Remus said as he left the room, leaving the two boys alone.
Remus had everything he had ever wanted: a family, a friend, and a peaceful life. But he still wanted something else, not for him, no, but for his son. After Jason had returned from Hogwarts when his first year ended, he talked about a certain girl he befriended. Remus had also seen her at the station before Jason left for his school, and even managed to click a picture of them. He didn't know why he did that, but it seemed to him as if it would be fruitful now.
Remus noticed, whenever Jason talked about Hermione, or even spoke his name, his eyes shone brightly and a dreamy look fell over his face as if he had drank the most intoxicating alcohol in existence; Remus knew that what looked like because he had seen that look on Sirius many times before.
Jason's dreamy look also reminded him of James Potter and how he would get whenever he talked about Lily. James didn't use to say 'Lily' in the normal way. Instead he said in a dreamy kind of way as in 'Lilehhhhh'. In the same way, Jason didn't say 'Hermione' either; he said 'Her-my-own-neee'. Remus didn't know if Jason every noticed that but it is how he said her name whenever he was describing her to someone else.
Remus knew right then and there that his 12 year old son was in love. Crazy for a boy his age, but what would you expect? Grindelwalds had been known to find the love of their lives at a very young age.
Over the years, this love seemed to only grow and grow, without any hint of ever stopping. And when Remus finally met Hermione last year, he understood why. Hermione to Jason was quite literally like oxygen and water was to living beings; a vital thing necessary for survival. She supported him, helped him and stood by him at every step of the way and Hermione was, in a sort of way, the first person, the first 'normal' person who ever accepted Jason as Jason; just a normal boy, and not someone to be feared and respected out of his last name. She was a way for Jason to survive without hating himself.
Remus was glad when he came to that conclusion. And now, he wanted nothing more than happiness for his son with the love of his life. Jason and Hermione both felt the same way towards the other. This was a fact that everyone could see, except them of course, even with all the evidence right in front of them.
