I turned on the shower the instant I stepped inside it, and my still body relaxed under the warm waters as my eyes captured the blood that was running off my body and heading inside the drain. If it wasn't obvious I had fulfilled another one of my mother's requests to end someone's life because of their constant misdemeanours.

Normally I enjoyed doing that, but today felt different.

"That was fast." My brother commented, looking up from the book he was reading in the corner of our mother's office.

"He was very cooperative." I responded before resting the bag of money I was sent to retrieve on her desk, "That's all of it."

"You couldn't have showered before you got here?" My mother questioned me, and I frowned deeply in displeasure because I had yet to hear a word of gratitude from her.

"I wanted to get the money to you as soon as possible because you made it sound urgent."

She didn't say a word or look at me as she counted every last cent within the bag before placing a decent chunk of it in front of me.

"Here."

"What's this for?" I inquired, looking at the money she had put in front of me.

"It's your cut, you did the job so you should be paid." She clarified, and I immediately shook my head, ready to remind her that I was okay doing this for free.

"You don't have to—"

"Take the money and go. Ion wanna be in anyone's debt again." My mother interjected with a look that told me she wasn't looking for a response.

"We family, I ain't gon hold this ag—" I began, but the sound of her phone ringing interrupted me.

"Yes, I was hoping we could..." She answered, rising from her seat to make her way outside the office without another word to me.

Maybe it was because she paid me for my work?

That made me feel more like an employee than family, and if I ain't know better I think that's what she was tryna imply.

A sigh forced its way out of my mouth and a yawn followed which had me reaching for my rag and a bar of soap, so I could begin the act of cleansing my body.

"You still haven't told me how you want your hair done." Jade reminded me as she took a seat on my white couch, and this had my mind drifting back to the numerous pictures I had viewed yesterday during my venture to find the perfect hairstyle.

"I wanted to try some fulani braids." I declared as I took a seat on the ground between her legs with my back facing her after I rested a pillow upon the floor to cushion its hardness.

I didn't waste anymore time as I removed my bonnet, but Jade decided to halt the act by taking hold of one of my hands.

"Damn, this ring is huge. Yo husband went all out, Oneil needs to step up his game." She exclaimed, displaying her usual vibrant personality.
