Chapter 23: Shadows of Betrayal
The soft hum of the early morning buzzed through the quiet office. Papers rustled as Aanya flipped through the documents, her tired eyes catching the glint of the first morning light streaming through the blinds. Rohan stood by the window, his silhouette dark against the glow of dawn, deep in thought. Across the room, Arjun hunched over his phone, the faint light from the screen casting sharp shadows on his face.
A sudden vibration broke the silence. Arjun's hand stilled over his phone, his eyes narrowing as he read the message. The color drained from his face, and he swallowed hard.
Rohan's voice cut through the tension. "What is it, Arjun?"
Arjun slowly looked up, his eyes meeting Rohan's. "They know. Someone's threatening to expose everything if we don't back off."
Aanya's gaze snapped to Arjun, her fingers tightening around the edge of the paper she held. The room felt colder, the weight of the threat settling over them like a heavy fog.
Rohan's eyes darkened, his jaw clenched. "They're trying to scare us."
Aanya pushed aside the papers, standing straighter. "It won't work. But we need to know who's behind this."
Before they could strategize, Rohan's phone buzzed in his hand. The unknown number flashed on the screen, and he hesitated for a split second before answering.
"Hello?"
A voice, smooth and deliberate, filled the silence. "Rohan Oberoi, you've been making quite a bit of noise. I suggest you quiet down before things get... unpleasant."
Rohan's grip on the phone tightened. His eyes flickered toward Aanya and Arjun, both now watching him intently. "Who are you?"
The voice chuckled, low and menacing. "Just someone with a vested interest in keeping certain secrets buried. Consider this a friendly warning stop digging, or you'll find yourself buried along with those secrets."
The call ended abruptly. Rohan lowered the phone slowly, his eyes distant, processing the threat that now hung in the air.
Aanya stepped closer, her voice soft but firm. "Who was that?"
Rohan's gaze hardened. "Someone who doesn't want us to find out the truth."
They shared a tense silence, the weight of the situation pressing down on them. The sound of shuffling papers and the distant hum of city life outside felt muted, insignificant compared to the storm brewing around them.
As they prepared to leave for their meeting with the police contact, Rohan's phone buzzed again. This time, the name on the screen made him pause: Devendra Singh.
"Rohan," came Devendra's voice, smooth and deliberate, as Rohan answered the call. "I hear you've been busy."
Rohan exchanged a glance with Aanya. "What do you want, Devendra?"
