Brewing Tension

The first week of the Potions project dragged on in an agonizing blur. Lexi and Mattheo's interactions were a series of barely civil exchanges and sarcastic barbs. Every day in the dungeons felt like an exercise in restraint, particularly as Mattheo's relentless teasing pushed her to her limits.

Today was no exception. Lexi stood by the cauldron, her concentration fixed on the delicate process of brewing Amortentia. She was determined to make this potion perfect—partly to prove herself and partly to avoid giving Mattheo any more ammunition. The scent of the potion's steam mingled with the sharp, acrid smell of Mattheo's cigarette smoke, which he had taken to lighting up just outside the classroom door.

Mattheo strolled over, a cloud of smoke trailing behind him. "Still working on that, Yaxley? I thought the Amortentia was supposed to be an easy one."

"Easy for some, maybe," Lexi snapped, her eyes fixed on the potion. "But if you're too busy being a lazy git to help, then maybe you should just stay out of my way."

He grinned, leaning against the table. "Oh, come on. Don't be such a killjoy. I'm just here to observe your valiant effort."

"I don't need your approval," she retorted, stirring the potion with a practiced hand. "Just stay over there and don't touch anything."

Mattheo chuckled and threw himself into a chair, propping his feet up on a nearby stool. "Fine by me. Watching you struggle is almost entertaining."

For the next hour, their potions simmered in uneasy silence, broken only by the occasional snide comment from Mattheo. Despite her best efforts, Lexi found herself growing increasingly frustrated with his presence.

"Why do you even care?" she finally demanded, glaring at him. "Why are you here if you're just going to sit around and mock me?"

Mattheo shrugged nonchalantly, though a hint of seriousness lingered in his eyes. "Maybe I just enjoy watching you squirm. Or maybe I'm bored. Who knows?"

Lexi felt her temper flare. "You're unbelievable. Maybe I should just ask Slughorn for a new partner. This is pointless."

"Good luck with that," Mattheo said dryly. "Slughorn's not the type to let us off the hook. Besides, you're stuck with me for the long haul."

Their eyes locked in a heated stare. Lexi was about to retort when the classroom door swung open, and Slughorn entered with a broad smile.

"Ah, I see you're making progress!" he boomed, his eyes twinkling. "I trust there have been no issues between you two?"

Lexi forced a smile and nodded. "Everything's fine, Professor."

Mattheo's smirk didn't waver. "All smooth sailing here, Professor. Just a little friendly banter."

Slughorn chuckled, clearly pleased with their apparent cooperation. "Excellent! Keep up the good work. I expect great things from this pair."

As Slughorn moved on to check on the other students, Lexi sighed in frustration. Mattheo's amusement was palpable, and it only made her angrier.

"You think this is a joke, don't you?" she snapped once Slughorn was out of earshot. "You think you can just waltz in here and make everything difficult."

Mattheo's expression hardened slightly, his usual bravado slipping for a moment. "It's not a joke, Lexi. I've got my own shit to deal with, just like you do."

Her anger faltered slightly at the edge of sincerity in his voice, but she wasn't about to let him see that. "Yeah, well, if you want to be a pain in my arse, then I'll just focus on getting this potion right. You can sulk on your own time."

He watched her for a moment, his gaze inscrutable. "Fine. Just don't expect me to play nice."

Their potions continued to bubble and hiss as the tension between them crackled like the steam rising from the cauldron. The rest of the lesson passed in strained silence, with Mattheo's occasional sneers and Lexi's stony retorts punctuating the air.

When the bell rang, signaling the end of class, Lexi packed up her things quickly, eager to escape. She barely noticed Mattheo's dark eyes following her as she left the room.

Outside the dungeons, Lorenzo caught up with her. "How was it today?" he asked, his tone laced with concern.

"About as bad as you'd expect," Lexi said, rubbing her temples. "He's infuriating."

Lorenzo gave her a sympathetic look. "Maybe he's just trying to get a rise out of you. Sometimes it's easier to push people's buttons when you're hiding something."

Lexi shot him a puzzled glance. "What do you mean?"

"Never mind," Lorenzo said with a shrug. "Just remember to keep your cool. It's going to be a long year."

As Lexi headed to her next class, she couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that Lorenzo's words might hold some truth. There was something about Mattheo's behavior that seemed to hint at deeper struggles, but she wasn't ready to let her guard down.

For now, she resolved to focus on the project and prove herself. Whatever Mattheo's reasons, she wasn't going to let him get the best of her. Not yet.
