Yeon-Jae
I found myself frowning as I stared down at her. As soon as I called out for her, she stood up and hastily wiped her tears away. She then looked up at me and forced a smile, "Woah, I didn't expect to play that song or to cry." she said as she forced a laugh.
Her reaction concerned me even more. I took a step forward until we were inches apart and stared into her tearful eyes. I wanted to know what happened to the Amalia I once knew ten years ago.
"What happened to you?" I inquired, my voice trembling with worry. She raised her eyebrows as she looked back at me before averting her gaze and feigned laughter.
"What are you talking about? I was just crying because I hadn't heard this song in a long time. It gave me a sense of nostalgia--"
"Amalia. Please." I said and she glanced back at me. I took another step closer, "What happened to you for you to become like this?" I asked, this time louder. She paused and contemplated.
She attempted to walk away but I gently took her hand, stopping her. "Is it the song? And does it relate to you getting panic attacks?" I demanded as she tried to flee.
"Amalia!" I exclaimed and she stopped trying to move and looked up at me again. Realizing what I just did, I took a deep breath, "I just want to know. I'm worried about you."
"Well, you don't have to be. I said I'm fine! Who are you to ask me personal questions like that?'" she finally spoke.
I furrowed my brows. I wanted to tell her that I deeply cared about her and that she was my first love, "I-I'm your...friend and whatever you're going through, you can't go through it alone--"
"Even if I tell you, what's going to change? There's no point." she protested, and I narrowed my eyes at her, trying to read her expression. What happened to the once bubbly and optimistic person I met ten years ago?
"Nothing will change. But at least you won't go through it alone. At least you'll know that you have someone to lean on." I spoke.
"Yeon-Jae..."
"I can't bear to see you like this. Amalia, some people care about you. I care about you." I continued, and her eyes widened.
"Why do you care about me? You're wasting your time. Even if I tell you, it won't help me."
"Others might have given up on you but I haven't. I never will." I said and slowly released her hand.
"I... I can't, Yeon-jae."
"Why?"
"Because I'm scared!" she exclaimed as tears rolled down her face. I gently cupped her cheeks and wiped her tears. "What happened?" I asked, for the umpteenth time.
After a minute, she finally sighed and wiped her tears, "Can I show you instead?" she inquired, her face suddenly devoid of any emotion, and I tilted my head in confusion. Without waiting for my reply, she turned around and lifted her hoodie, revealing a lower part of her back. My eyes widened upon seeing a deep scar on her back.
After a few seconds, she placed her hoodie down and turned to face me. I only stared back at her because I didn't know what to say. She sighed, "Do you know why I have a scar?" she asked, and I slowly shook my head.
"Because that's the price I have to pay for what I did," she said as she stared at me dead in the eyes. The scar looked like a surgical scar. Did she get in an accident? I raised my eyebrows "Why don't you get it removed? You have the money..." she scoffed and pushed her hair back before looking at the piano past me.
