Rohit was feeding Virat, who sat across from him, when a mischievous idea crossed his mind.
"Vi," he said suddenly. Virat looked up, raising his eyebrows. "Ek question puchu tumse?"
Virat nodded.
"If not me, tum kisse shaadi karte?" Rohit asked casually, offering him another bite.
"Hain? Matlab?" the unexpected question visibly astonished Virat.
"Arre, matlab if I weren't in the picture, whom would you have chosen? I'm sure someone prettier, someone closer to your age, right?" Rohit teased.
Virat narrowed his eyes at him. "Why this sudden question?"
Rohit laughed. "Arre bolo na!"
Virat bit his lips. If it weren't for Rohit, Virat knew he wouldn't have married anyone else. He felt lucky to have Rohit. For the longest time, he'd imagined being married off to a slimy, old man who wouldn't care about him. Unexpectedly, Manika had married him to Rohit, and not someone like he'd feared.
Rohit snapped his fingers in front of Virat, bringing him out of his thoughts.
"Arre, how long was the list of boys before me, haan? You've been thinking for 30 minutes! Should I be worried?" Rohit asked playfully.
Virat shook his head. "Kuch bhi, Ro... And you're so dramatic. 30 minutes? It hasn't even been five!"
Rohit chuckled again.
"Agar aap nahi hote and if I had the choice, toh koi nahi hota," Virat finally answered.
Rohit stared at him. "Really?" he asked softly.
Virat smiled widely and nodded.
"What did you mean by 'if you had the choice', Vi?" Rohit asked again, feeding him the last bite.
Just as Virat was about to explain, looking visibly sad, someone opened the door, interrupting their conversation. Rohit rolled his eyes as the two ladies of the house entered.
"Abhi tak khaane mein kuch kyun nahi bana, Virat?" Anila asked directly as she walked in, followed by her mother.
"Mai vo—"
"Beta, agar tumhe nahi banana tha, toh bata dete na," Ambalika interjected, pinching Anila slightly to keep her quiet.
"Mummyji, actually—"
Anila, ignoring her mother's signal to stop, interrupted again. "Haan, what was the need to hide here and eat? Bhai, you too didn't scold him? Last night he caused such a big fight, and now he's hiding here to eat so no one can call him out!"
Rohit squeezed Virat's hand, who looked guilty, and finally stood up.
"Ho gaya aap dono ka? Aur kuch bacha hai kehne ko?" he asked, crossing his arms and raising an eyebrow.
The ladies immediately stepped back, intimidated by his stance.
"Bhai, you're going to take his side again, but this time he's at fault! We've been hungry since morning!"
"And?" Rohit demanded calmly but firmly.
"And what, Bhai? We're hungry, that's it!" Anila raised her voice slightly.
"You both have working limbs. Go into the kitchen, make something, and eat. I don't see the problem here," Rohit replied in the same calm tone.
"That's not the point, beta. Virat should have—"
"Virat is not obliged to serve any of us. He cooks because he enjoys it, not because it's his responsibility to serve you. He's the son-in-law of this house, not our P.A. If he didn't cook today, that's his choice," Rohit said, cutting her off.
