When the lizard mutts attacked Finnick, they didn't kill him. Instead they sank their fangs into his skin and released powerful toxins into his blood. Finnick became very sick of these bites and was taken back to district 13 to be hospitalized immediately. He lay many days on the brink of death, but finally, one day he woke up.
Finnick didn't remember anything about himself and had no recollection of what was going on. Each day Katniss and Peeta would come to sit with him, but nothing would trigger his memories. Annie couldn't bear to see Finnick so confused. She practically lived by his bedside as he struggled to understand who he was.
One cold winter day, Annie went to get Finnick some breakfast. She came back with a buttered roll and a cup of tea for him. Finnick thanked the lady he no longer recognized and took a sip of his tea, cringing the bitter taste. And at that moment, Annie spoke four words that caused all the lost memories to come flooding back to him.
"Want a sugar cube?"
