"I know, I know. Okay, tell Grammy I'm sorry. Okay? What did.. Mom. What do you want me to tell you? He's making me work the weekend.. No, I'm not.. no. Listen, I've worked too hard for this promotion to throw it all away, okay? I'm sure that Dad is pissed-" You see Garrett walking out of his office. "We take all our submissions around here very seriously. We'll get back to you as soon as we can." You say and hang up."Was that your family?" Garret asks, already knowing.
"Yes."
"They tell you to quit?"
"Every single day." You say and pick up the phone again when it rings. "Mr. Tate's office.. Yeah, okay. Alright." Hanging up you turn to him. "Bergen and Malloy want to see you upstairs immediately." Garrett groans.
"Okay, come get me in ten minutes. We've got a lot to do." He tells you and leaves.
"Okay-dokey." You say and pick up the phone when it rings again.
...
"Good morning, Mr. Tate." The secretary tells Garrett as he walks past her, but he ignores her and walk into the office.
"Jack, Edwin." He greets them.
"Garrett. Congratulations on the Oprah thing. That's terrific news."
"Thank you. This isn't about my second raise, is it?" He chuckles. "Just kidding."
"Garrett, do you remember when we agreed that you wouldn't go to the Frankfurt Book Fair, because you weren't allowed out of the country while your visa application was being processed?" Bergen asks him.
"Yes, I do."
"And.. you went to Frankfurt."
"Yes, I did. We were going to lose DeLillo to Viking. So.. really didn't have a choice, did I?"
"Well, it seems that the United States Government doesn't care much about who DeLillo publishes Don DeLillo." Bergen tells him.
"We just spoke with your immigration attorney." Malloy says.
"Great. So, we're all good? Everything good?"
"Garrett, your visa application has been denied." Bergen tells him and Garrett's brows raise, he stammers in shock. "And you are being deported."
"Deported?" He asks in disbelief.
"And apparently there was also some paperwork that you didn't fill out in time."
"Oh, come on! It's not like I'm an immigrant. I'm from Canada!" He laughs. "There's gotta be.. there's gotta be something we can do."
"We can reapply, but unfortunately you have to leave the country for at least a year." Malloy tells him.
"Uh.. okay, well, that's not ideal, but, uh.. I can, uh.. I can manage everything from Toronto.. with videoconferencing and internet. I can.."
"Unfortunately, Garrett, if you're deported, you can't work for an American company." Malloy says and he looks at them in a frozen state.
"Until this is resolved I'm going to turn operations over to Bob Spaulding." Bergen informs him.
"Bob Spaulding? The guy I just fired?" He asks pointing behind him.
"We need an editor chief. He's the only person in the building who has enough experience."
"You cannot be serious.. I beg you."
"Garrett. We are desperate to have you stay. If there as any way, any way at all that we could make this work, we'd be doing it."
"There's no way.." Garrett says but hears knocking on the door. "I am begging you."
You peak your head inside.
"No, Garrett. Excuse me, we're in a meeting." Bergen tells you.
"Sorry to interrupt."
"What?" Garrett looks at you.
"Mary from Miss Winfrey's office called. She's on the line."
He nods, gesturing for you to talk faster.
"She's on hold. She needs to speak with you right away. I told her you were otherwise engaged." You say, he freezes and looks at you. "She insisted, so.. Sorry. So.." You say but see his expression.
Garrett looks between you and Bergen a few times.
"Uh.." He then mouths for you to come in and you frown, not moving. "Come here." He whispers through gritted teeth and you walk in. "Uh.. gentlemen. I understand, I understand.. the predicament that we are in. And, uh.." He says and walk backwards toward you. "And there's, uh.. well.. I think there's something that you should know." He says stopping beside you. "Uh.. we're, uh.. we're getting married."
You look at him confused and then at the men.
"We are getting married." He repeats and clap you awkwardly on the back.
