The friendship was still there, but things had changed₊˚🖇️✩ ₊˚🎧⊹ ♡
"He just has a cut from that headbutt and a bump," the doctor explained, her voice calm and reassuring. "The dizziness earlier was likely from the impact, but he should be fine. For now, he just needs rest." relief washed over you, as though a few thorns had been pulled from your chest. "For now, he just needs to rest for a bit."
"Thank you so much, ma'am," you replied. She nodded and walked away. The other man, however, had been taken to the hospital in critical condition. You’d spoken with the police earlier, who told you that the man had recently been discharged from rehab and would undoubtedly return after this incident. Now, you sit by Kaji’s bed, watching his peaceful, sleeping form.
Suddenly, Kaji’s phone buzzes on the table. You pick it up to see Suo’s name flashing on the screen. When you answer, his voice spills out, laced with worry. "Hey, I've been trying to reach you! Umemiya and Nirei went to town looking for you. Don’t tell me you escaped with Y/n to live off the grid in some quiet rural town?"
You chuckle, but Suo falls silent on the other end. "Y/n? Wait—where’s Kaji? Where are you guys?" His voice toned down.
"We’re at a clinic," you say calmly.
"A clinic? What happened?" he exclaims, and then you hear Kotoha’s voice in the background before she takes the phone from him.
"What’s going on? We’ve been worried sick!" Kotoha says, her voice is taut with concern.
"There was an incident," you admit, glancing at Kaji. "Kaji’s hurt, so we’re at a clinic right now."
"What? We’re coming over."
"No, don’t worry about it. When Kaji wakes up, we’ll head back. It’s not too serious," you reassure her. "We still plan on joining you all later."
"Your well-being matters more than a party," Kotoha insists softly.
"Thank you. We’ll be back soon," you say, trying to sound reassuring.
"Alright. I’ll let Ume know to expect you guys."
You hum in response, and she hangs up.
Just as you’re about to put the phone down, it rings again. This time, it’s Lara.
"Hey, why haven’t you been answering? You didn’t even message me," Lara’s voice comes through, laced with worry.
"Hey, Lara," you answer. "Kaji’s asleep."
She hesitates. "Oh, Y/n… Why do you have Kaji’s phone?" Her voice skeptical. You understand that considering you're a rival from before.
"I saw the call and didn’t want it to wake him if it was urgent," you explain.
"Oh… Are you two at Nirei’s place?"
She brushed off that thought and her voice calmed. You're a friend now, she already got what she wanted and there's no way she'll be threatened, you yourself kept distance from him anyway.Still, interactions like this were inevitable because you're in the same friend group.
You pause from her question, debating whether to tell her the truth—that he’s hurt, and it’s because of you. What would she think?
