~Hazel~
There was always a pattern to being locked away. The sharp glares, the way his jaw clenched in the heavy silence. I could tell he had cursed me a dozen times in his head, but after the chaos I had just unleashed, I hadn't expected a hug and a forehead kiss either.
"Shouldn't we be heading to the clinic with her?" Tyler cut in, noticing Asher steering me in the opposite direction.
Asher didn't even look at him. "You will not leave this room until I confirm that I'm the father of that baby." His voice was steel, each word a chain around my throat.
For a brief, ridiculous second, I wished I had the power to teleport—just to bribe a doctor into faking a positive result. But I had let myself forget the kind of control Asher had over everyone.
"So the doctor is supposed to just go in there and magically know?" Tyler challenged.
Asher let out a sharp breath, then yanked a handful of test strips from his pocket and threw them at me. "No. She'll use these."
My stomach twisted as he pushed open the door to a dimly lit room and stepped inside with me. The lock clicked into place.
"I thought I was supposed to be alone," I said, forcing my voice to stay even.
"I don't trust you not to do something reckless—like trying to escape through the damn window," he shot back, eyes glinting with warning.
He moved closer, fingers curling around my wrist as he all but shoved me toward the bathroom.
"Now do it before I lose my mind. And you'd better have some good news for me."
I turned to him, feigning confusion. "But I already told you, Asher. Shouldn't we be at the doctor's for a proper DNA test?"
His frown deepened. "We'll do that after. I refuse to be made a fool of in front of my subjects.
You've disgraced me enough with your whore history."The words landed like an explosion, but I refused to flinch. Not when I needed a quick miracle.
If I was truly pregnant, was I actually ready to raise the child of a monster? And if I wasn't, I would still get pregnant because Asher was desperate for an heir.
So many bad thoughts sprinted through my head as I awaited the test results and then after a minute, a singular line popped up.
Negative.
Apparently, none of them were man enough to make me heavy or was I the barren one?
Now that got me more worried and it didn't help that Asher was just a bad decision away from breaking down the door and seeing his crushed dreams.
With no time left for me to think any further, I sharpened my claws and dragged it lightly over my thighs, just enough to cause a trickle of blood.
I pressed my fingers to my stomach, feeling the life I had to fake disappearing then came the scream.
I needed to make him believe me.
Crumpling to the floor, I clutched my stomach tightly to cause actual pain and I screamed even louder.
"Hazel!" He yelled, rushing to my side as he cupped my face.
Never did I imagine that I would see fear in his eyes. Was it because of his heir or about losing his mate?
"What the hell did you do?" He lifted me off the floor and took me out of the bathroom.
I didn't dare to answer instead a sharp gasp left me, certain enough to convince him that this was more than a mere act of childishness.
"Tyler! Call the doctor now! Get him here with the nurses and be quick!" He ordered, his eyes still gleaming with terror.
Did he love me that much? I thought he would stand at a corner and slowly watch me die for betraying him?
Tyler bolted out of the room to make a call while Asher kept muttering prayers to the goddess.
"Hazel, if you—"
He knew he wasn't bold enough to say the word.
"Just stay with me and I'll forgive you.""I'll pretend like nothing happened with any of my brothers if you just hang in there for me." If I didn't know better than to keep up the act, I would have blushed and told him that it was all a prank.
But then I would be back on the streets with beggars.
"I'll get you whatever you want if you just stay strong."
"The doctor is coming, alright? You'll be fine, I promise, my princess." He kissed my knuckles and sniffed like he was crying.
If I opened my eyes to peep, he would catch me. I had to keep this up just for a while.
As I did a little happy dance in my head over how charming he was temporarily, the doctor came in.
"Please, lay her down." He ordered whom I presumed to be his nurses.
I felt Asher let go of me and the next thing I knew was a sharp sting on my arm as I took my blood for a test.
"Is she going to be okay? What about the baby? She was supposed to take a test but I don't know what happened in there." Asher said with a worried expression.
"She's still breathing, Your Majesty."
"Let's just see what the tests would say." He assured him calmly.
"Well, how long is that going to take? You know I hate suspense." He complained, folding his arms.
"You won't have to wait long enough, Your Majesty."
Asher kept quiet right after that and in a couple of minutes, the results were out and the doctor didn't seem worried.
He looked rather confused.
Asher grew overstimulated as he watched the doctor carefully run his eyes over the results without saying anything.
"Doctor?" Asher called out. "What does it say? Is she sick or something?"
The doctor's lips parted, and I braced myself. The moment of truth was coming. My lie would be exposed and I might as well say goodbye to the sweet side of Asher that I always enjoyed.
"Doctor, say something or do I have to read it out myself?!" He demanded, his frustration mixing with annoyance.
I was more desperate than ever for a distraction. All I wanted was for a minute with the doctor to plead my request.
