I opened my eyes. I looked into two red pools. The pools of that one strigoi, Dampé.
"You're finally awake."
"What am I doing here?"
"You won't be here very much any longer."
"What, why, what are you doing?"
I was sitting in a huge black chair made of metal. My arms and legs were strapped to the chair, so I could not move.
"I really like your presence here, Rose. It gives me an idea of what I can expect."
He walked around my chair with long strides.
"Why do you expect anything from me? Or did you already know I would come and save Lissa?"
"Of course I expect you to save her, you silly girl. I have almost complete access to your thoughts right now. You really like Dimitri eh?" He laughed, but there was no humor in his eyes.
I didn't know what to say or do. Not only did I feel very unpleasantly, but also was I afraid. I had seen strigoi before, but none of them had scared me as much as this Dampé did. It was a feeling I could hardly describe. As if he was not real. As if he was something I couldn't place inside my head.
"Let me go." I said. It didn't sound very convincing.
"Of course I'll let you go. I can't keep you imprisoned here forever. "
He looked me in the eyes.
"Yet."
I woke up screaming, not knowing where I was. Dimitri and Rusl sat next to me and Dimitri was holding my hand.
"Was it all a dream?" I asked to no one in particular.
Dimitri and Rusl looked briefly at each other.
"No it was not a dream Rose." Dimitri said silently.
That scared me.
"Than what was it?"
"It is the bond Rose", Rusl said, "someone was in your brain."
"How is that even possible?"
Dimitri let my hand go, stood up and turned his back to us.
"We don't know what Dampé is capable of. He is the smartest thing I know. "
I also stood up and grabbed Dimitri's arm.
"Is there nothing we can do?"
Dimitri looked me in the eyes.
"I am not sure what we can do, but I will try my best to make sure you will be safe. I won't let anyone hurt you, Rose."
I nodded silently. I felt so weird. So unreal.
"What's the plan Dimitri?" Rusl said.
"I think I know where we should go. But first we must find some way of transportation."
We had walked for almost two hours when we reached the edge of the forest. In front of us lay a little village. I never knew there was a human village so close to our school. The village looked so peaceful, a complete different world. As if no vampire had ever set foot in it. The peacefullness was quickly ruined when Dimitri broke a window of the nearest car, crept inside, opened the car door and motioned us to get in.
"Did it have to be so violent?" I hissed angrily at Dimitri.
"I am the violent one now?" He smiled a little at me, which made me smile in turn, which made me sad, because I still felt for him
Quickly I took my place on the front seat, before Rusl took it.
"So, where to comrades?" I asked curiously.
"I know two persons who I count as family", Rusl said, "Dimitri is one of them, and the person where we're going is the other, not because I know him so well, but because he is the one who made sure I ended up with the Belikov's."
"You're not afraid Dampé can hear this information through the bond?"
"Dampé doesn't know who we're talking about. Although I can't say this person's name. I haven't seen him very often in my life, maybe once or twice, but he has told me that he studies the vampire race to discover why moroi turn strigoi when they're bitten, why dhampirs can't get children together, how the five elements work and, most importantly, all the details about being shadowkissed and how bonding works"
"And is that why we're going there?" I assumed.
"I think he can help you to keep Dampé out of your head. He is a very special man. The last time I met him he bragged about finding a way to block bonds " Rusl explained.
"Interesting." I said.
I wanted to know so much about this bonding, about Lissa and me. But this would probably not be the right time to ask.
After hours and hours of driving we ended up in a small city. Dimitri parked the car and gestured me to follow him. Rusl walked behind me. In this situation I felt more like a vulnerable moroi than like a strong dhampir, who should protect others. We walked through small alleys until we stopped in front of a little house, almost squished together between all the other buildings. Dimitri knocked on the door. A tall, slim man opened the door. I estimated him in his fifties, but he still had pitch black hair. He wore aviator glasses, which made him look a bit old fashioned, and a lab coat. He looked me straight in the eyes.
"I believe we haven't met yet." he spoke softly.
I just nodded, but didn't really feel like giving away my name.
"As for you two," the man said sternly, looking at Rusl and Dimitri, "you should know I am only available when the situation is urgent"
Dimitri grimaced. "Believe me, the situation is urgent. We need a bond to be blocked"
I expected some sort of shocked reaction from the man, but I didn't see much of a facial reaction, except for his twitching eyelid.
"Well," he said, "you've certainly come to the right place."
Rusl intervened. "Dampé is the reason she needs blocking."
Now the man turned pale and before I knew what was happening he had thrown his lab coat over my head and held it tight.
"Hey!" I yelled. "What's this about."
"You stupid boys!" the man growled. "What do you think happens if he knows my identity?"
"It's okay Rose." I heard Dimitri's voice.
"Believe me, if someone you don't know throws a dirty lab coat on you head you wouldn't feel okay either." I said dryly.
I heard him sigh, but he didn't react to my remark.
"Let's get her inside. Can you do the blocking right now?"
"Yes," said the man, "but it won't be nice for her."
That made me shudder, and with these words they led me inside.
