I went into this with little expectations, but I thought it was pretty good. I liked it a little more than the first one as the action scenes were more packed and served well with DMC's hack and slash style of gameplay. It is it's own separate universe from the games so you don't necessarily need to play them to understand the general story, but they do put in plenty of fun Easter eggs for you to guess.
With the casting, I like many others thought it was weird to hear Johnny Young Bosh as Dante since he plays Nero in the main timeline, but he actually did a pretty good job with capturing Dante's wacky and laidback personality. Scout Taylor-Compton did great as Lady, I enjoyed her growth throughout the show and hope to see more development as it progresses. Robbie Daymond was an interesting pick for Vergil, I hope he can show more of his character in the future. And Kevin Conroy (RIP) had done a great job as a secondary antagonist for the show. I hope he was able to record more lines for a season 2 before his passing. If not, I hope they'll find a work around with it.
With some pros I like, the story was pretty good as it centers around Dante in his younger years and goes into his journey on self discovery. As I mentioned earlier, the show is in its own separate universe from the games so they have more freedom with the characters and their backstories. They kept some of the core stuff as the same like their origins and what sets them up, but changes it enough to make it more unique while still honoring the source material.
If DmC: Devil May Cry had done this, it would've been more appealing.
Anyway, the action scenes were epic, too. My favorite's the highway chase and the plane scenes. The use of Devil Trigger was amazing and gives it a higher level than the first anime. I thought it was interesting that they made Vergil's Devil Trigger to be Nelo Angelo. I'm not sure if it's his main trigger or if it's part of Mundus's control over him. Either or, it makes for a good Easter egg and callback to the first game.
The soundtrack was excellent. As a 2000s kid, it definitely gave me flashbacks to some of the old AMVs they made back in the day. My favorite was Evanescence's "Afterlife." They also made references to other songs like "Devil Trigger," "Devil's Never Cry," and of course "Bury The Light."
The expansion on Hell's interesting. Having demons that are equivalent to slaves and refugees does add more world building and story for it.
With cons, the only ones I really have were the lack of explanation on how DARKCOM was made, Lady still insisting that Baines is right, and how fast they somehow got at setting up a basecamp in Hell and already took in prisoners.
I hope this gets renewed for another season. I'm genuinely curious about what they want to create for this show and I'd like to see it play out. Some things I hope for would be more character development on Dante, Lady, and Vergil, it'd be cool to see Mundus make an appearance, more world building on Hell, introducing Trish and Goldstein could add in for a fun twist, and with music, definitely wanna see bands like Skillet, Linkin Park, Three Days Grace, and Breaking Benjamin would be good picks.
Feel free to give your thoughts on the show.
