Mom's appointment ended early, and after nearly three hours of babysitting my daughter, she finally came to La Paraiso Hotel to pick Isabelle up. Though I loved having my daughter with me, I couldn't focus on my paperwork with her present. So after kissing Isabelle on the temples, she and Mom disappeared through the door.
Alone again, I continued the work I had set aside, hoping to finish it in time or else I’d have to work overtime.
Fate, it seemed, failed to hear my prayer. Hours passed, but I didn't finish my paperwork in time, and it was needed by tomorrow. Groaning, I glanced at my wristwatch and let out a resigned sigh.
One more hour, I told myself and began typing on my laptop.
When I finished typing, my gaze shifted to the additional documents I needed to review and sign. After I was done with them, I could finally go home.
My secretary had already left the office since she had nothing more to do, and I was all alone now.
I managed to finish everything in less than an hour. Stretching my legs, I temporarily closed my tired eyes, allowing myself to ease the strain before opening them again.
Rising from the chair, I printed the documents I had just typed, signed them, and tucked them inside a folder, placing it on the side of the table where my secretary would pick it up tomorrow. She knew exactly what to do with them afterward.
Making sure that everything inside the office was in its place, I picked up my bag and placed it on my shoulder before making my way to the door.
The sun was descending down from the horizon when I finally emerged from the upscale entrance of La Paraiso Hotel. It wasn't yet dark, but the streetlights illuminated the streets already.
With the car key now in my hand, I walked toward the area where I had parked my car.
The hotel parking area had been fully occupied since morning. Even the VVIP area, which stands for Very Very Important Guests, was full. That's why I parked my car across the street.
Looking left and right, I made sure no cars were in sight when I crossed the street.
Humming, I walked to my car with quick but careful steps. Suddenly, my wits scattered in the air at the ear-splitting sound of a car horn tearing through the tranquil silence.
My heart jumped several inches inside my chest when my gaze turned to the car speeding wildly in my direction.
Perhaps I was too shocked that my mind completely went blank.
I expected the car to slam into my body, but before it could hit me, powerful arms caught me by the waist and hauled us both to the side of the road, where we landed face down on the hard cement.
The car expressed its frustration with another furious honk as it sped away.
My eyes landed on the man who just saved me. My words of gratitude disappeared in the air when I saw Grey with a frown plastered across his dark face.
He rose from the ground.
I gathered my scattered wits and collected myself, then slowly eased myself from the ground.
The side of my favorite pencil skirt was torn, exposing half of my thighs, but that wasn't my concern at the moment. I was more worried about the bruise on my arms caused by the impact of my fall.
I was still composing myself when the blaring sound of a car approaching made my heart jump several inches again. The car moved in reverse, and this time I was sure the incident wasn't an accident but intentional.
“Shit!” Grey loudly cursed under his breath. He hastily grabbed me by the waist and dove forward before the car could hit us.
Once more, I found myself sprawled on the cemented ground.
“Aaaah,” I groaned in pain at the stinging sensation in my ankles. I tried moving them, but the wave of excruciating pain made me whimper.
“Are you okay?” he asked, the frown on his forehead turning into a scowl.
“My feet hurt,” I whispered breathlessly, unable to hide my tears.
Grey murmured something under his breath. I didn't understand what he said, but I was sure he had just let out a curse.
He quickly came to check my ankles, which I was sure I had twisted as we were thrown to the ground to save ourselves from being hit by the car. He carefully prodded the aching spot with his fingers, and another painful whimper emerged from my lips.
Without another word, he lifted me off the ground and carried me inside the hotel with ease, where he ordered the staff to bring some ice.
“Do you recognize the car?” he asked.
I shook my head in response.
I bit my lower lip as he began to apply a cold compress to the part of my ankle that was beginning to swell.
“Whoever tried to hit you with the car was no doubt trying to kill you,” he told me. It was my thought too, and yet hearing it from his lips made a shiver run down my spine.
If he hadn't saved me, I would most likely be dead by now.
He pressed the cold cloth against my swelling ankles. Biting my lower lip, I endured the pain until a tear fell from my eyes.
Fifteen minutes later, he finally stopped applying the cold compress to my swollen ankles.
“I'll call your parents to come here and drive you home. You're not fit to drive your car in your condition,” he told me.
Too shaken to argue with him, I gestured for him to hand me my phone, and to my surprise, I did exactly that.
He scrolled through my contacts and found Sophia's number. The call was answered on the second ring.
“This is Grey, Mrs. Phoenix… I have to tell you something unpleasant about what happened to your daughter… Don't worry; she's safe…” He immediately explained what had happened to me, and I winced after hearing Mom's panic-stricken voice on the loudspeaker phone.
“Dear Lord!” she gasped. “I'll tell my husband what happened to her.” Sophia said hastily, and what followed was the sound of her shoes slapping against the tiled floor of their house. She was running to the part of the house where Father was.
Mom was consumed by panic that she completely forgot to turn off the phone.
Grey handed my phone back. I kept it inside my bag.
A few minutes later, seven cars parked in front of La Paraiso Hotel.
