Entering the door first, wearing a grim expression on his face, was Father. Walking alongside him was Mom, with an equally grim expression plastered across her beautiful face. The sight made me bite my lower lip in guilt. I made them worry again, I thought to myself, sighing. Following behind Sophia and Philip were my brothers—six of them—looking worried as hell. My whole family was almost complete; only Grandma was missing. The sight of them elicited more attention from the crowd gathered around the area. Everyone instantly recognized them.

The group immediately rushed in my direction as they quickly spotted me seated on one of the plush velvet sofas adorning the lobby. Mom reached me first. “Are you okay, Lily?” she asked as she sat down beside me. Her eyebrows scrunched in worry as she examined me from head to toe. When she saw my red and swollen ankles, her frown deepened even more. “It's worse than I imagined,” she mumbled under her breath.

“I'm fine, Mom,” I told her, but it didn't convince her at all. “I'm really, really fine,” I repeated, trying to make her feel better, but she wasn't buying it.

“I will ground you for a week, Lilibeth. I won't take no objections.” Mom said. It was not a plea but an order. My lips opened to argue but stopped. Once she used that tone, everyone in the family knew it was the final decision. No one goes against Sophia Phoenix when she uses that tone.

I surrendered. Heaving a weary sigh, I could only look at my lap.

Grey watched us quietly. His expression remained unreadable.

“Where the hell are your bodyguards? They aren't doing their job! Look at you!” Philip's sharp voice thundered across the lobby.

Father was seriously pissed off. I wasn't quite sure if it was me or my bodyguards, but it could be both.

“It wasn't the bodyguards' fault.” Finally, Grey broke his silence. All pairs of eyes turned to him, including my own.

“They were nearby when the accident happened. But I was the closest to her when she happened to be crossing the street,” he began. The expression on his face remained the same. “The car popped out of nowhere and suddenly sped in Lily's direction. Before the bodyguards could reach her, I got to her first. The bodyguards have guns, but they chose not to fire because Lily and I were in the way, and we could have been hit by accident.” Grey explained, and Father fell into momentary silence.

When none of my family members spoke, Grey continued. “Aside from that, the hotel vicinity is crowded with prospective guests and there were also passersby. By the time it was safe enough to fire their guns, the car had sped away. The guards then chased after whoever was in the car. I'm certain the bodyguards will contact you first once they catch the villain.”

I let out a relieved sigh; at least Grey had explained that it wasn't the bodyguards' fault at all.

“We're going home, Lily.” Finally, Father spoke. He appeared much calmer now than he did a while ago, but the frown on his forehead remained.

“We will have to talk soon. Not now… I have important things to prioritize.” Father said as he turned to my ex-husband. Grey, in return, briefly nodded his head in agreement.

Whatever questions I wanted to ask regarding what Father wanted to discuss with Grey disappeared in an instant as Luis picked me up from the plush velvet sofa at Father's order. Without another word, I was carried to the door and laid down in the backseat of the car, with my family trailing behind.

I hadn't even had the chance to thank Grey, I thought to myself, sighing. Though we were not on good terms—at least on my part—he deserved to hear my 'thank you' for saving my life.

The door closed, bringing my thoughts back to the present.

Father sat in the driver's seat beside Mom. Looking at her face, the frown that had been scrunching her beautiful features was gone, though that didn't mean she wasn't worrying anymore.

I didn't say a word until the car sped away from the hotel. I took one last look at Grey watching us leave before leaning back against the soft leather seat.

Could it be that Natalia is still alive? The question came to my mind instantly, rendering panic and fear inside me.

I couldn't shake the idea. I was quite certain that she was still alive.

The sound of the phone ringing captured my skittering thoughts. It was my father's phone ringing.

He answered the phone, and I listened because I knew it was my bodyguard calling him.

Father pushed the loudspeaker button so we could understand what their conversation was about.

“We managed to chase the car and caught the one who tried to run over Miss Lilibeth,” the familiar voice of my bodyguard said grimly.

Was it Natalia? I wondered. Still holding my breath, I waited for him to finish.

“A man did it to her. His name is Nathaniel Winters.”

The man's name instantly rang a bell. After thinking deeply, the answer came to me. A gasp emerged from my lips.

“Do you know him?” Mom asked as she saw my reaction.

I nodded my head. Summoning my voice, I finally replied, “He was the employee I dismissed after committing three consecutive grave violations against the hotel: one, drinking while on duty; two, stealing hotel amenities; and three, harassing two female employees.”

“Lock the man behind bars. Make sure he will not harm my daughter again,” Father said to the man on the phone. Then the call ended.

As the journey back home progressed, I leaned back in my seat, relieved to discover that Natalia had nothing to do with trying to kill me again. Mom assured me she was dead, and I was reassured that she was.

Finally, we reached home. Then my phone rang. I looked at the screen and saw Grey calling.

Where the hell did he get my number?
