Arjun’s Office | Late Afternoon | Mumbai Skyline Draped in Rain

The sleek glass panels of the twenty-second-floor office were fogged slightly from the humid drizzle outside. The sound of rain tapping gently against the windows was the only background score in the otherwise silent room. Arjun stood near the window, his broad back facing the door, eyes scanning the city below like a hawk or perhaps, like a man searching for calm in chaos.

He was dressed sharply in a tailored navy suit, but the creases near his collar and the loosened tie hinted at the storm brewing inside him. His right hand clutched his phone tight, the screen glowing with Pallavi’s name " my heart ". His knuckles were pale, voice unusually soft, thick with emotion.

“Jaan… just stay back today, please. I’ll take you there myself tomorrow. I promise. Just… for today, stay back,” he pleaded.

It wasn’t a command. It wasn’t a suggestion. It was a raw, unfiltered request , a plea from a man whose instincts were screaming at him that something was wrong.

There was a brief pause on the other end, and then came Pallavi’s voice  as warm as sunlight, as stubborn as ever.

“Arjun, she’s flying back to London today. I just want to go and see her off, give her a hug and come back. I’ll go and return the exact same way - you won’t even notice I left.”

She was smiling while saying it. He could hear that little smile in her voice  the one she used whenever she wanted to downplay a risk, or distract him from worrying. But it didn’t work this time.

He turned away from the window, running a hand through his hair, trying to stay calm. The soft glow of the office lights fell on his face, revealing a deep frown on his forehead and eyes darkened with unease.

“At least take the bodyguards with you—” he began, hoping for a compromise.

“No way!” she cut him off instantly, and with that tone that left no room for argument. “I hate those robotic faces. They’re always stuck to me like I’m under house arrest. They don’t understand boundaries or privacy.”

Arjun closed his eyes. That was Pallavi — fiery, independent, unafraid. But right now, her strength only made him feel more helpless.

He took a breath, stepped away from his desk, and leaned against the glass wall, fingers tightening around the phone.

“You’re not understanding…” he whispered, voice shaky. “My instincts are off today. They’re not letting me feel okay about this. I don’t want you going alone. Pallavi… if something happens to you…”

He swallowed, forcing down the lump in his throat.

“…then Arjun doesn’t survive either. You know that, don’t you?”

There it was , his worst fear, spoken aloud. The idea of losing her, the only person who had ever truly known and loved him - not the CEO, not the empire, just him ,  was unbearable.

A long silence followed. He thought the call might’ve disconnected, but then came her reply, softer now, filled with affection.

“My dear Arjun… the reason your heart feels like this is because your soul lives inside me.”

She paused, and he could hear her breath — steady, comforting, hers.

“Don’t worry, okay? I’m not a little girl. I’ll take care of myself, I promise. And I know how important today’s deal is for the company. You’ve worked for this for years. So focus on that. Let me handle this small errand, and I’ll be back before the rain stops.”
