Nathaniel & Nancy | The Ugly Truth
***
"To watch a movie?" I nodded handing her my collection of Back to the future."You guys need to get comfortable with each other, just talk and hang out for a while."
"But if you're here...he won't even pay attention to me."
"I'll be in there." She nodded. "You think he'll be able to see it?" I pointed to the ear piece that had a Bluetooth connection to my phone. Letting her hair out of its high pony tail she pulled her thick, glossy strands over her shoulder. Her hair completely covered her left ear and in turn the ear piece. Forcing a smile I turned to leave.
"How do I look?"
"Beautiful." I spoke without looking at her. Currently I was battling with the idea of watching them together. Nate deserved someone who loves him as much as Amelia does and me...I would have to suck it up. Having Amelia's blood on my hands was something I couldn't live with. The second I was done here, I would return to England. I couldn't see myself ever forgetting Nate, but it would hurt too much to see him become someone else's.
I'd been ignoring him for an entire month, it was getting harder to dodge him. I didn't even know how he was coping, I didn't see him attending any lectures and most of the time he'd just be waiting outside my lecture halls. Those days I'd ditch also. This was the first time I'd called him since we'd slept together. I could barely recognise his voice. Opening the door to the dorm joining Amelia's, I slipped into the other room.
Dialling her number I checked if the Bluetooth connection was adequate. "Can you hear me?" I whispered. Turning she gave me a thumbs up. We both gasped when a loud knock echoed into the room. I made sure to shift out of view, straightening her skirt Amelia moved to open the door.
I gripped the door handle painfully tight when I saw the smile fall from his lips. "Um...Nancy?" She motioned for him to come inside. He scanned the empty room and frowned. "She's not here?"
"Oh...she, um..."
"Tell him I got a call and had to leave."
"She got a call and had to leave." My heart sank seeing the disappointment shadowing his features. Shoving a hand through his hair he handed Amelia a bag full of things I was sure he'd brought to snack on. Neither of us could watch an entire movie without something to munch on.
"Oh..." Tucking his hands into his pockets he looked lost for a moment. "When will she be back?"
"I'm not sure."
"Okay, um, tell her rein check I guess." He turned to leave and she shot me a panicked look. I had no clue how to stop him. I'd just assumed he'd watch the movie with her or wait for me.
"She...she's on a date." Amelia blurted. My eyes widened, Nathaniel stilled at the door and from the angle I was in I could see his jaw clench. Looking over his shoulder he tightened his grip on the door knob.
"What did you just say?" He almost growled.
"She's on a date. That's why she had to leave, she's liked the guy for a while now and yeah...that's why I'm not sure if she'll be back tonight or...tomorrow morning." The lie she'd told didn't sit right with me, in fact it fucking pissed me off. How dare she? I didn't want Nathaniel to think of me like that. The truth was; there had never been anyone else but Nathaniel and it was getting harder to deny that it wouldn't always be Nathaniel.
"Who with?" His clipped tone sent a shiver down my spine. She swallowed, I was left speechless.
"Chris." She blurted, his hands balled into fists at his sides and I winced. He hadn't liked Chris from day one, he'd always claimed that Chris was trying to get into my pants. I'd become pretty good friends with Chris so I always brushed it off...that pissed him off even more.
