When Day Meets Night

Chapter 1: At the infirmary

Nico lay down on the infirmary bed and thought about what had happened that morning.

He stared at the slowly rotating ceiling fan as he recalled his conversation with Percy Jackson.

"You're cute, but you're not my type," he had said.
Percy had been pretty shocked and had said something like- "Wait, what??" But Nico had felt great. It felt good to finally accept himself for who he was.

Someone knocked on the door. Will Solace, who was tending to a daughter of Demeter, opened it and raised an eyebrow when he saw who it was. Then he looked directly at Nico. Nico felt a tug in his stomach. "It's Percy," Will said. "He said he wants to talk to you."

What a tubelight, Nico thought. It took him this long to understand??
He nodded and sat up in his bed.

Percy came in nervously. Will went back to the Demeter kid. Percy drew out a chair and sat beside Nico. Usually Nico would be annoyed by this. He would have probably said something rude to Percy to make him go away. But that was back when he had a crush on him.

"Hey Percy!" Nico said and smiled.

Percy smiled too. "Hi..." He said. "So I've been thinking about what you said earlier... And I just came to check if we're cool now?"

"Absolutely," Nico replied. "Like I said before, I'm over it now."

"Cool... So Nico, I want to apologize for pretty much ignoring you... I was not very nice to you, because I didn't understand..."

"That's cool. I was really rude to you all the time, so I can understand you wanting to stay away from me."

" No, I-"

"That's okay," Nico laughed. "We're friends, right?"

Nico saw Will staring at him from across the infirmary. He realized Nico was looking at him, and quickly picked up a bottle of medicine and began inspecting its label.

"Right." Percy smiled. "Ummm.... So can I ask you something? When exactly did you start...ummm..."

"Liking you? Pretty much as soon as I saw you." Nico laughed at the embarrassed expression on Percy's face. "Yeah... When you saved Bianca and me, I was completely infatuated because you were so heroic and stuff. Then I blamed you for Bianca's death because I thought you were powerful enough to prevent it. But I get it now. 'Some deaths cannot be prevented'." Nico quoted his dad, Hades.

He noticed Will staring at him again. When Nico looked at him questioningly, he just quickly looked back down.

Percy looked from Will to Nico. He cleared his throat and stood up. "So... You look much better now. See you at dinner today?"

Nico nodded.

"Jason and I got this idea of starting a 'Big Three table' for the children of the Big Three- basically just the three of us. Anyways, it's better than sitting alone everyday."

"Cool," Nico replied. Percy nodded and walked out.

Will looked at Nico. Nico looked back. Will put the bottle of medicine down and came over. He adjusted Nico's pillows so he could lie down again comfortably. "I told you," he said.

"Told me what??"

"That you have plenty of friends already, if you'd just stop pushing them away."

Nico smiled. "Yeah, yeah," he said. "Fine, you were right."

One of Will's siblings called out to him from outside. They needed his help with something.

"Coming!" Will replied. He looked back at Nico. "You know," he said, "I like it when you smile- you look cute." And he walked out.
