Epilogue

Shifters’ Den, Logan’s Office

Logan

“It doesn’t make sense. It just doesn’t,” Jill growled, pacing back and forth. Bryce tracked her movements. His eyes following her body. Back and forth. She was going to wear a hole into the carpet with her pacing.

“I know Chaos and this isn’t something she would do. She saves shifters for heaven sake! I was with her on many rescues. You guys shouldn’t be even thinking along the lines of her bombing the Den! And if she was the one bombing the Den, don’t you think she is smart enough not to detonate the bombs while she is standing near one? She wouldn’t have been stupid to get caught in the cross-fire. And Derek! She told your mate exactly which buildings had bombs and she evacuated the Den’s school. She didn’t do it!” Jill shrieked. Bryce made a grab for her, but she quickly steered herself out of his way and continued her back and forth motion.

“Jill, I understand how this might be upsetting, but all of the evidence points to Chaos.” I drawled, I sent out an air of calm, but it didn’t stop her from pacing. My response, however, caused Jill to jerk to a stop. She sent me a look of pure hatred, her golden eyes hardening.

“Upsetting? You have no idea. And don’t you think that all of the evidence is a little suspicious?”

I went to open my mouth, but a melodic voice beat me to it. Kade’s forest green eyes compelled Jill to settle down. “Occam’s Razor.”

She turned sharply and focused on Kade. “What did you say?”

Kade cleared his throat, uncomfortable to have all eyes on him. “Occam’s Razor. It’s a principle that recommends that the simplest answer is the most likely correct.”

Jill didn’t seem to like the explanation. “Yeah, well bookworm, obviously you don’t know Chaos. I will explain it slowly. She doesn’t do simple. So therefore, Chaos theory trumps Occam’s Razor.”

Kade’s brows furrowed. “That doesn’t even make sense. The Chaos Theory is a mathematical theory. It refers to the behavior of dynamical systems, which are—”

Jill huffed in frustration, “No! Not the real Chaos Theory. I meant Chaos theory, the fake one.”

Everyone stared at Jill in confusion. Hell, I was confused. I glanced over Jill’s shoulders and sent Bryce a questioning look. He shrugged his shoulders and raised his hands in defeat.

Jill recaptured my attention when she said, “You know how men have the idiotic ‘bro code’? And all of the men say women have their own code of behavior that no man will ever understand? Well, the Chaos theory I am talking about is like a revised code of women code. It specifically refers to Chaos. And rule number one of Chaos theory is nothing is ever simple.”

I was still a little confused, but I think I understood what Jill was trying to say. I had to admit; Chaos did dance to her own tune and almost never followed conventional logic. Jill opened her mouth to continue her explanation, but my phone rang.

Everyone froze. It was the call we all have been waiting for. It has been two dreadful weeks since the bombing. Bodies were still being found. Yesterday, some shifters found a body near the bomb.  Doctor Monto was examining the body, which fit the body description of Chaos. The body was burnt beyond facial recognition and need DNA identification. Bryce reached out and dragged Jill. He tucked her firmly on his lap and folded his arms around her stomach. Jill was just beginning to show her baby bump. The air filled with several different emotions, but the strongest emotion was the fear coming from Jill. Bryce nuzzled her neck and murmured that everything was going to be okay.

I leaned forward and answered the phone, putting it on speaker. “This is Logan. Speak.”

“Hi Logan. It’s Monto. I am afraid I have the results with me.” Over the phone, I could hear Doctor Monto taking a steadying breath. “I… Logan, the results confirm that the body is indeed Chaos. The DNA matches the samples we took when she came into the Den as Samantha White. I ran the test twice to confirm.”

The room was silent. Jill hiccuped, and then sniffled. Her hand shot towards her eyes, swiping furiously. She sniffled again and Bryce hugged her closer, murmuring soft words. Braden stood up and walked out of the room, slamming the door. Kade closed his eyes and dropped his head into his hands. Falkon’s eyes darkened dangerously, but besides that he didn’t outwardly react to the news. Derek sat in his seat staring at the phone, lines tighten around his mouth and eyes. Grief, anger, despair swirled around the room, gathering everyone in its arms and crushing them. I felt the crush of the emotions, the tightness in my chest. My heart’s irregular beating.

Doctor Monto’s voice murmured is apologies.

Jill sobbed, “No, you have to be wrong. She, she wasn’t stupid. She would…she wouldn’t do… No!” She broke down crying. She picked her feet up and curled inwards. Her arms locked around Bryce’s neck and she buried her head into his neck. My heart clenched with pain. Pain for Jill and her lose. For me. For Chaos. For the dead. For the unfairness in the world. I thanked Doctor Monto and hung up. I felt as if I was in a daze. Shifters’ Den was blown up. The Den was bombed by Chaos. And Chaos was dead.
