Chapter Six

(Jordin’s POV)

When fifth hour comes around, the disappointment has fully settled in. I don’t even pay attention in class, midway through I pull out my sketchbook and start to draw.

I start with the top of the head, ruffling it so it looks like messy hair. I then finish the mussed yet styled hair with the bangs and then draw the rest of the face. I trace the strong jaw; add in ears; put in a straight nose; high cheekbones; plump lips; and large eyes. Once I’ve made the basic outline, I move along to coloring.

The bell rings just as I start shading the top of the hair. I stuff all of my art supplies into my bag and rush out to the bus. When I’ve found a seat and the bus pulls out, I start coloring again.

I melt together light, dark brown, the lightest black and the darkest blonde to create the perfect shade of brunette. I then bring it down to the eyes. I mix together four different types of green; emerald, jade, forest, and spring to make a pair of glistening eyes, close to but not as amazing as the real ones.

I stop my work to just stare into those drawn eyes. They look so beautiful that I wish I were looking at the real things. Two pale green gems fitted just below the dark bangs and above the delicate yet powerful high cheekbones.

My eyes then rake over the whole of the face I’ve drawn. It’s a very handsome boy that my hand has traced and I can’t help but admire his appearance. I then take in the big picture.

I’ve drawn Scott in my sketchbook.

The next morning I wake up to the brightness of sunlight spilling in through the window in my room. I check the alarm clock and see that it’s just seven-forty. I groan but get out of bed all the same. I feel suddenly inspired by the early timing and step to the closet.

I decide to dress up a bit and find a short white tennis skirt and a dressy spring green top in my closet. I pull on the clothes and then go into the bathroom. I find the box of makeup I’d been gifted for my sixteenth birthday—that I never opened, I might add—and pop it open. The amount of makeup in the thing overwhelms me. Not only that, I have no idea how to use any of it. I find a small circular tub of what’s labeled ‘eye shadow.’

I find something that resembles a Q-tip and dip it in the silvery powder. I dab the stuff around my eyes so that it’s visible on my eyelids. I then dig through the box of makeup a bit more and uncover a tube that says ‘mascara’ on the side. I pull the top off the tube and there’s a weird spiky thing attached to it. I hold it up to the light and try to figure out where it goes. Not knowing, I refer to the tube; “apply on eyelashes.”

I shrug and draw the spiked end of the lid through my eyelashes. It makes the lashes curl upward and shine black. I look in the makeup box again and find a tube of something that says ‘lip gloss.’ That seems easy enough. I pull it open and see that there’s a Q-tip attached to the lid this time. I draw the thing across my bottom lip and it leaves a sheen of sticky sparkles. I press my lips together and try to reduce the amount of stuff on my lips.
