Chapter 40

Closing my eyes, I wished the sight away.  I didn’t want it to be him that betrayed us.  There was a small inkling of hope that he hadn’t, but we all knew deep down that it had been him the entire time.  The question was why?  Why was he going through all of this?  Hadn’t he already gotten what he wanted?

“Grandfather,” Seb said in a tense voice.

I threw my unease to the back of my mind.  Seb needed me, and I would do anything to make sure he didn’t get hurt any worse than he already was.  My eyes opened and settled on the man who had been a sort of mentor for me in the beginning.

“Sebastian,” Michael said with a tiny nod, “what brings you here?”

Seb’s body tensed beside mine.  “Why am I here?  You!  You are the reason I am here.  You are the reason everything has been so hard for us.  You!”

Reaching my hand out, I attempted to lay it on Seb’s shoulder, but he shrugged it off.  Hurt flowed through me.  Maybe it was idiotic to be hurt that he rejected me when he was in such an emotional turmoil himself, but I couldn’t help the way I felt.

Michael stood from his seat with the grace that all shifters held.  “Would you let me explain?  Or do I have to sit here while you scream at me?”

Seb’s eyes were full of rage when he gazed at his grandfather, but he just shook his head at the man.  “I can’t believe you would do this.  Do you not understand that you could have killed me?  If you didn’t care about her, then you should have at least cared about your own grandson.”

“Don’t be so dramatic, Sebastian,” Michael said with a bored expression.  “You may think you love the girl, but once you realized she wasn’t good enough for you, you would let it go.”

“Not good enough for me?” Seb asked in disbelief while grabbing my hand and placing it on his shoulder, “I’m not good enough for her.  I’m selfish and think about myself.  Like just now, I hurt her, Grandfather.  Why?  Because I was angry at you, and I took that out on her, but do you see her complaining?”

“Seb,” I whispered while tightening my grip, “we can talk about it later.  You weren’t being selfish; you were being human.”

Michael let out a laugh.  “That is what’s wrong with her.  She doesn’t think like a Queen.  She will never be good enough for our plans.”

“I love her, Grandfather, and if you can’t deal with that, you’re dead to me.”

“You’re going to pick her over me?” Michael asked with disgust on his face.

Seb grabbed and pulled me to his side.  “I am picking the mother of my cubs, my mate, my best friend, my Queen, and the woman that I love over you, Michael.”

“You mated with her?” Michael asked while falling back into his seat.  His face turned white as he whispered, “That wasn’t part of the plan.”

“What is the plan, Michael?” I asked.

His eyes connected with mine.  If Seb hadn’t been holding me, I would have taken a step back at the hatred that glowed in his eyes.  “Damn you, but you are a stubborn person.  You never would have let us take control.  You would never have let me take over, and that is why I needed to get rid of you.  You and your damned friends made everything complicated.”

“So it was you who shot at me?  You were the one who sent Stacey after me?”

“Of course,” he told me in disbelief.  “Did you honestly think either Jack or Stacey could do this by themselves?”
