Chapter 54
My footsteps kept silent. Not wanting to alert Seb where I was going, I made sure to sneak away. As soon as he realized I was away from what he thought of as the ‘safe zone’, he would be pushing me back into the vehicle without question. Evelyn was in there though; I could feel her. Her hatred flowed around me. It ran over my skin, making me feel dirty. Something was different about this woman; I just wish I knew what it was.
The woods encased me, shielded me from the hectic situation behind me. The chill in the forest was worse than it was in the open, and I immediately shivered from the difference. Looking up, I wish that the canopy of trees didn’t make it so dark. Sure, I could see fine, but it was the thought, the thought that I was in the dark with an unknown source after me.
The air shifted, the small animals scurrying around quieted, and I knew she was near. As I turned to my left, I listed to the sounds of footsteps moving closer. This was it. This was the time to end all the problems I had. No, I was not stupid enough to believe this would make me safe forever, but I knew with her gone, my life would be easier. The constant worry over my family would ease slightly, and I could move on just a little more.
She stopped as I took a deep breath. Her scent filled my nose. Low in my throat, a growl vibrated. Why did her scent send me on edge? She was nothing. She wasn’t a witch, she wasn’t a shifter, and she wasn’t any other type of mythical beast. So, why did that small whiff of air send me on edge, make me want to shift and rip her throat out?
“Come out, Evelyn,” I whispered into the woods.
She stepped out, a cold smile on her face. “Took you long enough, Little Queen.”
I glanced down at my body and let out a laugh. “I do not know if you have noticed, but I am far from being little.”
“You have a month left?” she asked, the same grin etched on her face.
My smile dropped as I saw the calculations click in her mind. “There is nothing you can do,” I said with confidence. “You are human.”
She shrugged. “Humans can do many things to stop your kind. Just ask my daughter. It looks as if she is doing well, for a human.”
“Emma,” I answered, “has shifter blood. She has a little extra oomph that allows her to do these things. What do you think would happen if she were human? I will answer the question for you; she would die. Her body would be lying on the cold ground, and there would be nothing a human like you could do about it.”
Her eyes narrowed while she bared her teeth. “Be quiet, you stupid girl.”
“Why?” I asked with a laugh. The woman had been around shifters too long if she were baring her teeth at me like a wild cat.
“You are going to regret your words,” she whispered before reaching behind her back.
I let out a loud sigh, knowing what was about to happen. One arm wrapped around my stomach as the other one slinked down to snag the knife on my thigh. Just as I thought, Evelyn pulled the gun out from the small of her back.
“You know what is in here?”
I tilted my head the side and sent her a small smile. “I am hoping that the answer is silver bullets, because if it is not, you are as big of an idiot as we all thought.”
The gun leveled at my chest, and I sighed in relief. I could dodge it as long as she aimed first. Her eyes narrowed to even further slits. “What is with the sigh?”
