As Lily and I walked along the corridor, heading for the prefects' meeting, I stole a sidelong glance at her, wondering how such perfection could be combined in one person.
I regretted looking at her instantly afterwards. She sped up and hurtled away from me.
"Lily! Wait!"
She slowed down, eying me with her trademark expression of deep dislike. "What is it, Malfoy?"
"Don't call me that," I said wearily. "Look, I just wanted to say something I just realized I never actually said to you."
She raised her eyebrows. "Well? What is it?"
I gulped. "I'm, um, sorry. For calling you a... that word."
She looked at me incredulously. 'You do realize it's been almost four years since you called me that?"
I nodded. 'I'm really sorry all the same, though."
She looked thoughtfully at me. I could see the wheels turning behind those amazing eyes. Finally, she nodded.
"What was that supposed to mean?"
'Apology accepted," she said. Her face was still stoic, but something seemed to soften behind the electrifying blue of her eyes.
"So can we be friends?"
"No." That answer came with insulting rapidity.
"Why?'
"Apologize to Rose and ask her in advance to the Yule Ball. Then, maybe."
Is there anything worse than the girl you fancy trying to set you up with her cousin? I asked myself.
I shook my head. "I can't do that."
"Why?"
"Because I don't fancy Rose."
"Why?"
"I fancy someone else."
"Who?"
But looking at her, I realized I could never tell her.
