Chapter 4
I am not a morning person.
And Rainne? Let’s just say she couldn’t give two fucks about that or the wrath of my morning mood once someone woke me up.
“RISE AND SHINE PRINCESS!” she all but screeched as she ripped the curtains to her guest room open, the California sun shining bright as ever, unlike yesterday. I merely grumbled a go away in response, pulling the covers over my head to shield the sun.
“C’mon Abs. Don’t be like that, it’s time to get up and be nice to people today. Okay, maybe not nice since that’s not up your alley in the morning, but smile Abs, it’s a beautiful day. We have school...” she trailed off. I felt the bed dip and something moving towards me, “LET’S GO WE’RE BURNING DAYLIGHT!” she screamed in my ear.
I abruptly sat up, “RAE WILL YOU SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE!? It’s un-fucking-believable that you can be this bubbly and loud at six in the goddamn morning” I told her grumpily.
She grinned and got close to my face, so close I could smell her morning breath, not that she cared anyways, “someone’s awfully crabby this morning. Wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Or have too much fun last night, lose track of time, and get in really late?” She wiggled her eyebrows.
I sighed, “You’re such a barnacle. No, for your information, I got home at 10 o’clock last night. And never again, will you wiggle your eyebrows like that. Especially while on the topic of Declan” I responded, sternly.
“Whatever, you know you want him,” She winked, “You’re giving me the details later, I hope you know that” she said as she sauntered out of the room. I shook my head. Of course she wouldn’t let me slip by without telling her about last night. She’s like a parasite; she eats through my life and knows every bit of it. She festers in me and doesn’t let a single detail get by. But hey, aren’t all best friends like that?
I went into the bathroom and plugged my iPhone into the iHome sitting on the counter. I needed some music if I was going to be able to function and get ready this morning. Faster Ride by Cartel blasted through the speakers. Good thing everyone in Rae’s house is up and moving already, or I’d be dead. People in this house treasure every second of sleep, except Rainne, who is basically everyone’s alarm clock. That’s what I love about her house. I fit in so perfectly here, unlike life at my house. That’s probably why I’m always here, plus I’m used to being here since I’ve been spending time in this house since I was a wee kid.
Humming the lyrics, I got turned on the shower and took a quick one since we have to be to school in about an hour. I got out; blow dried my hair, and straightened it. I didn’t feel like wearing it natural again. Something everyone knows about me is that I can’t wear the same hairstyle two days in a row. I think it’s weird when people do that. Like this one girl at school straightens her hair every day. Doesn’t that get boring? I like to spice it up a bit every once and a while.
Finishing my hair, I walked over to the closet, where I put all my clothes in before I went to Declan’s house last night. Skimming through my clothes, I picked out jean shorts and my wild spirit racer back tank. It’s my favorite outfit to wear. I went back to the bathroom, deciding to spice it up even more and put smoky eye shadow on with some top eyeliner. It really made my blue eyes pop. I threw on my Converse and headed to the kitchen.
Rae’s brother, Andrew, was in there munching on a toaster waffle.
“Hey loser” he said, his words muffled from the waffle stuffed in this mouth.
I grimaced, “Ew, Andy, at least swallow before talking to me. I feel bad for the girl who ever has to take you to dinner to meet her family”
He grinned like a maniac, “Me too,” he said stuffing another part of waffle in his mouth, trying to grin again with food in his mouth. The majority of the waffle fell out of his mouth, and he looked down at it with a sad expression on his face. I just started laughing at his expression, walking out with an apple in my hand. He cursed at my retreating back for laughing at him, which was also muffled from the waffle left in his mouth. I let out another bark of laughter saying, “Remember to swallow before talking, Andrew, so people can at least try to understand what you’re saying.”
“Rainne, you have six seconds to get down here or you’re walking your sorry ass to school!” I shouted up the stairwell of her house. Her dad walked in from the living room and said, “Tell her Abs,” grinning. Did I forget to mention her parents were awesome?
Rae sprinted down the stairs and continued running out to my car, breathlessly saying, “Over my dead body I’m walking to school.”
Pulling up to school, singing like usual, we got out and walked to our group of friends. Everyone was there, but Bryson. That’s unusual…
“Guys, where’s Bry?” I asked curiously. Everyone shrugged their shoulders while Ryan said, “your guess is as good as mine, Jake tried calling him a few minutes ago and he didn’t pick up.” Jake nodded.
“I’m gonna try texting him,” I said more to myself than anyone. It was weird for Bryson not to be by our group. He’s been there every day before school since we started dating about a year ago.
Hey Babe, where are you? Xx
The warning bell rang so I walked to class with Rainne. My mind focused on Bryson. It’s been about five minutes and he didn’t respond to my text. He always responds to my texts within a couple of minutes. I’m kind of worried. Maybe I’m over-analyzing? Yeah, that’s it. He probably just woke up late.
I haven’t been listening to what Mr. Turner was saying. I’ve been waiting for Bry’s text, which I still haven’t gotten. Just kidding, my phone just buzzed.
Hey, I woke up really late. I’m just heading to school. Sorry you couldn’t see me this morning, comeover later and I’ll make it up to you? ;) Xx
Such a goof. Yeah, that sounds good. Xx
Well I freaked out for no reason; I knew he was just running la-
My train of thought got broken as Hailey Jameson walked into class. I shot her a dirty look while she just smirked at me, looking like she knew something I didn’t. Hailey and I have had a rivalry going on since freshman year, when I took her spot as the most popular girl in school. Ever since then, she’s hated me and done anything to take her ranking in school back. She’s jealous of everything I have. She’s on my squad for cheer, and she competed for the spot as captain but lost. She competed with me for Bryson when we were talking-
Wait. Hailey’s never late to class, and I repeat never. Neither is Bryson, he’s always on time. I narrowed my eyes in her direction, a few seats in front of me. Something’s up. I noticed her disheveled hair, which is normally brushed and smoothed to perfection. She turned around to talk to Mary, behind her, and my eyes flickered over her swollen lips. Her lip gloss was smudged, and I’ve never seen that. Her lips are always perfectly glossed.
And then it hit me. That slut hooked up with someone before school and they were so into it, they were late for class. And that someone she hooked up with very well could have been Bryson.
