Far over the misty mountains cold.

To dungeons deep, and caverns old.

We must away, ‘ere break of day

To find our long forgotten gold.

The pines were roaring in the height.

The winds were moaning in the night.

The fire was red, it flaming spread.

The trees like torches blazed with light.

Her eyes fluttered. The sound that came streaming into her ears from the darkness around her was pleasant. She was sure it came from another world, for this husky and dark sound was nothing she had ever heard before. The tune echoing in the halls of Erebor, the source of the beautiful sound was unknown, nowhere in sight, nowhere to be found.

The rain dripped from the sky outside and flooded the muddy grounds like pools of water in big amounts.

The song continued on in a calm, cosy mute sound and even though it would make any person fall back asleep, it woke the Elf up and kept her awake. Her long, dark eyelashes that formed the outline of her big blue eyes perfectly, fluttered once more; the colour of her eyes lighting up the dark like two spotlights. It was strange – she had never heard that song before in her life.

The strange light and the strange sound of the song made her feel as if she was dreaming. The wonderful warmth made it seem even more likely so.

Once the lightening outside the window sent stripes along the sky and lit up the whole world, including the room, she could finally see Thorin – lonely sitting in the shadows on a wooden chair, smoking his pipe. He was the source of the song and she never wanted to take her eyes off of him.

He wasn’t wearing much – only a pair of simple woollen pants and a shirt that showed a bit of his chest and forearms. He was staring out the window into the abyss, not moving, just singing that song out into the darkness once the light disappeared from the sky again.

A soft fur quilt was laying half way up Aria’s naked back, although the quilt did not make much difference, as the room was strangely warm enough as it was. She struggled to tense up her muscles to get her head off the pillow, but once she sat upright in the soft bed, she wrapped the quilt around her body and approached Thorin in the dark of his everlasting song. He didn’t stop singing when Aria got herself wrapped in Thorin’s arms, laying herself down in his lap. She could clearly indicate that the soft and dark tune was much closer now, and she was finally determined to fall asleep again, not wanting the Dwarf to leave her. She was not aware of when the sun was going to rise over the horizon and the world was going to go back to its old routines.

She felt hands and arms wrap around her entire body in the dark, keeping her close, and she felt Thorin’s hard chest against her cheek as she rested herself against it. Thorin’s body made Aria toasty warm and she snuggled her face against his soft fabric shirt, fiddling with some loose threads with her fingers. She didn’t want to move, just simply stay that way, just listening to Thorin’s voice that she knew had come somewhere above.

The lightening lit up the skies again, and Aria could once again witness Thorin’s beautiful face, and he was met by hers. As he saw her, he smiled, stopping his singing for one split second to quickly kiss her. To a few seconds later kiss her again, again and again, kissing her all over her face. Aria closed her eyes to his soft yet rough touch because of his beard, and she giggled. Although she craved to kiss him more, she chose not to, still wanting to hear the song sound throughout the room with that mysterious tune.

Thorin held her tight, almost cradling her like a baby, resting his cheek on Aria’s head whilst staring out the window stained with rain droplets, and the sky lighting up every now and then. The sound of the rain made everything seem more perfect, more beautiful, though Aria still did not want to fall asleep with this moment being way too perfect.

But once the thunder came cracking down over the sky, making everything shake and rumble, Aria flinched, quickly burying her head into Thorin’s ribs and he stopped singing. The thunder kept rumbling and cracking for a bit, until it was replaced by lightening again and Thorin wrapped his arms tighter around the frightened Elf in his lap.

“Hey…” He pulled her out from his side with his soft voice in the dark, and he carefully kissed her passionately, not wanting her to be afraid. “Aria, don’t be frightened, please. I won’t let anything hurt you.” Thorin started singing again to the dripping rain and got himself up from the chair with Aria in his arms. He carried her over to the bed, laying himself down beside her to wrap them both in a quilt. “You’re my angel”, Thorin kissed her again, letting her snuggle into his chest again. “I’m going to protect you forever.”

And Aria fell asleep to the sound of his voice, clutching onto him, never wanting him to leave.
