I sighed as threw the laundry into the machine.

'Tara!' I called over my shoulder

'What?' Tara's loud voice could be heard for miles.

'Its your turn to do the laundry today! Surely you knew that!'

Tara stomped into the room, looking pretty pissed off, but her expression changed to cheerful and cheeky once she saw me struggling with all the laundry. She helped me chuck it all into the half-broken washing machine and then stood up, looking proud of herself.

'There!' She proclaimed. 'I've helped you do the laundry! Can I go now?'

'Fine, Go do nothing you little brat' I said over my shoulder with a grin. Tara was one of my housemates, and my best friend. She may have been a complete lazy-ass but she was pretty amazing and I loved her for it. She was pretty much the equivalant of a gothic barbie doll. Her favourite colour was black, of course and she was always wearing some sort of clothing that involved skulls and bones or some sort of band T-shirt.  She had a collection of black mini-skirts and little tank tops. She never went anywhere without her little black purse which held a couple of wooden stakes in case she had to kick a vampire butt or two. Did I mention we live in a town full of vampires? Yeah, It's pretty exhausting at times, but we survive. Most of the time.

I walked back upstairs to my room and closed the door. I felt like some privacy after a hard day at University. My room was the only place I could have some time to myself. I could read, watch T.V, Play some computer games, whatever I wanted. It was especially good seeing as I had a lock on my door. You kind of needed one when you had 3 other people living in your house. I got out my book that I've been reading for the past week and continued reading it. Suddenly I heard the front door slam shut and I heard the loud, unmistaken voice of my beautiful boyfriend Jake.

'Yo guys! Who's home? I got food!'

I ran downstairs two at a time and jumped into his arms. We shared a long, gentle kiss and eventually came back up for breath.

'Hey babe' I said. 'I heard you brought us food, where is it?'

He laughed, a warm, deep laugh. 'Nice to know you care about me'

I laughed and stole one of the bags he was holding, racing him to the kitchen for it.

'Wait! That's not the food! Ellie, wait!'

I slowed down, laughing, until I saw the serious look on his face. I opened the bag to see multiple packets of dark red liquid.

Blood. Human blood.

I guess some things were best kept a secret.
