"Mama? Papa? Mike?" Vic questioned. We had just arrived at Vic's house again back in San Diego. "Wh-what are you doing here?"I was honestly just as caught off guard as Vic was. After staying with Tony and Erin for the night, we had gone by my lawyer to get new forms since I didn't want to pick up the other ones while Oli was around. When that was done, Vic convinced me to come back with him so he could spend some more time with his daughter. I could tell he really loved her so of course I agreed.
But it was obvious that Vic didn't expect to find his parents and his younger brother sitting on his couch when we walked inside. I especially wondered what was going through their minds once I noticed them staring wide-eyed and confused at Elise, who was on Vic's arm, with her tiny head resting on his shoulder.
"What are we doing here?" The older man repeated, a stern tone to his voice. "Victor, it's your mother's birthday, you were supposed to meet us for lunch."
"Shit, I'm sorry." Vic groaned, cursing some more below his breath. "Things have been a little. . . different, lately. I'm sorry, mama." He then apologized, going to his mother and kissing her cheek as he carefully held Elise to his chest.
"It's alright, darling. We've rescheduled so we'll be going out for dinner now." His mother then announced.
She then asked if I would be joining them, much to Mike's dismay as apparently he wasn't allowed to bring his own girlfriend along. Then again, I wasn't exactly Vic's girlfriend, or was I?
Anyway, Vic said yes before I could even open my mouth, so within an hour, the six of us were all situated at a table in a cute old-fashioned styled Mexican restaurant.
"I assume that since you forgot your mother's birthday, that you also didn't bring her a gift." Vic's father stated, making Vic roll his eyes.
Something told me that he wasn't exactly close with his father.
"You're right, papa, I didn't. But I do have kind of a surprise." Vic then said. He turned his head to me and smiled, extending his arm so he could caress Elise's cheek. "You are officially a grandmother, mama." He told her as he faced her again.
His mother's eyes went wide, and so did his father's. Mike's initial reaction was shock, making him spit out his drink in the process. I had to bite the inside of my cheek so I wouldn't laugh at him for it.
"Oh fuck, I just thought you were dating some chick with a baby." Mike then commented. "No offense."
None taken, I guess. . .
"No, Mikey, I'm dating someone who I have a baby with." Vic then corrected him, putting his hand in mine and lacing our fingers.
I blushed a little at that. Okay, so I was actually his girlfriend. Good to know that I had a husband as well as a boyfriend at the same time. Dear god.
Well, Oli and I were getting a divorce, but legally seen I was still his wife. . . for now. But nobody needed to know that. Especially not Vic's family.
The smile that appeared on the face of Vic's mother was so bright, you could probably see it from miles away. She looked at little Elise with such adoration, I could tell that she took the whole 'surprise' as a positive thing.
"You seem happy, son." Vic's father then observed. And for a moment, I could almost sense a hint of pride in the man's voice. Until then. . . "So when is she moving in with you?"
"Papa!" Vic exclaimed, rather tiredly.
"Yeah, brother. . ." Mike agreed. "When are you two getting married?" He then added jokingly.
I rolled my eyes a little. The look that Vic was giving his younger brother was murderous.
"We're not ready for that big of a commitment." Vic then said in a calm tone, directed straight at his father across the table. Though I could tell that Vic was just trying to end the topic of conversation.
"That big of a commitment?" His father then repeated mockingly. "You two have a baby, for God's sake! There is no bigger commitment!"
"It's complicated, alright?!" Vic then said, sounding really annoyed and frustrated at this point. Whatever he was trying to avoid was already happening.
"How long have the two of you been together, darling?" Vic's mother then asked. She, however, just sounded genuinely interested.
Vic sighed, letting his eyes roll back into their sockets for a moment. "A few days." He murmured below his breath.
"A few days?!" His father then scolded. "But-"
"I said it was complicated!"
Everyone fell silent after that. Everyone but Elise, who then started crying. The poor child probably felt the tension that was going on. "I'm sorry, I'll be right back." I excused myself.
I then got up and walked away with every intention of taking Elise to the bathroom to calm down for a minute. But before I could even make it there, Vic was at my side. He gently placed a hand on the small of my back and started guiding me to the door. "We're leaving." He snapped softly.
I didn't say anything and simply walked out with him, back to the car. Once we were driving off, Vic groaned loudly. "That's just typically my father, you know?" He said. "Ever since the whole plane crash thing he's been so, so- so fucking pushy. He gets on my damn nerves. And of course Mike has to go and be the jokester, making it even worse."
I put my free hand on his thigh and gave it a reassuring squeeze. "Families can be frustrating, I get it." I told him calmly. "If it's any consolation to you, I haven't even told my family that I'm divorcing Oli, let alone the rest of it. They're probably going to flip shit. Especially my little brother as well."
Vic laughed a little at that, his eyes flicking to me for brief seconds while he also focused on the drive to his house. "Well, let me know when you do. I need to be there to protect my two favorite girls." He then said, earning a blush from me almost instantly.
I felt so comfortable around Vic, it was like we had been together for years already. It was strange but, I couldn't help the way I felt. I didn't want to help it. And why would I? He was amazing.
I just hoped that my family wouldn't give me too much shit over it. Because despite the fact that we didn't tell Vic's family everything, I intended on telling mine all of it.
