"Alright," I said, pulling Hayden towards my Dragon's exposed neck. "Let's do this, then." I slid effortlessly onto the back of my Dragon, positioning myself between two spikes and making myself comfortable. Our Línghún merged together to become one. Suddenly I could smell the tropical aroma of the moonfruit, taste the salty ocean air; everything was increased by a hundred when we were connected. Every little detail was visible to our powerful eyes. Any sound that was made on the islands, we could hear. It was the most exhilarating experience I'd ever had.

Hayden was still standing awkwardly on the ledge. I realized that I could see the individual eyelashes around eyes that seemed too blue to be anything but an illusion.

"Are you coming?" I asked, my voice light and happy despite what I'd seen just over a week ago. Yín sè cocked her head at Hayden, concern in her massive silver cats-eyes.

"I don't think I should." Hayden wouldn't meet our eyes, just looked into a space above my head. "The most important thing for a Dragon Master is the first ride with his Dragon. Shouldn't my first ride be with Hóngsè?"

"I don't think it will make a difference, Zhǎngwò xíngdòng. Riding on me will just be like riding any other animal, but to ride with your Dragon completes the bond and unifies your Línghún." Hayden looked relieved, then climbed onto Yín sè behind me and ran his hand down her back.

"Good. Well, let's get going!" I could feel the muscles quivering beneath me, and then with two powerful strokes of her enormous wings we were up in the air and had an aerial view of the circle of islands. Despite her size, Yín sè made no noise as she propelled us through the air.

I snapped into a strange feeling of being in two places at once; I was on the back of my Dragon but I was also the one manoeuvring through the clouds at a steady pace. An elated cheer echoed through the air, and it took me a few moments to realize that it was me. The feeling of my coarse hair whipping around behind me and of winds blasting my face was breathtaking, to say the least.

The clouds tasted like moondew. Every time I opened my mouth to call out, the fluffy substance coated my tongue. We couldn't see anything, not even with my enhanced vision. The field of clouds was too thick, and we were buried to deep within the vapor.

Sometime during our take-off Hayden had wrapped his arms around my waist, using me as an anchor. I myself had no fears of falling off of Yín sè's broad back. The two of us were one, joined together by our bond and working as an effortless team.

Eventually even the excitement of flying wasn't enough, and I found my eyelids beginning to droop. It had been a while since I'd slept, and the gentle sailing of my Dragon would lull me to sleep in no time.

Hayden was already dozing. He was stretched out on Yín sè's spine, long legs and arms dangling off her sides. That man really could sleep anywhere.

I settled myself in, sending a silent goodnight to my Dragon. The moon was dark, and the clouds blocked out any view of the stars. It didn't take long for the persistent tendrils of fatigue to grasp my brain and send me into a deep sleep.

"Reiara..." the voice was smooth, shimmering in my ears and attempting to drag me back into consciousness. I ignored it and tried to snuggle deeper into my sleep. "You must wake up, young one... we are almost at the mainland."
