Ash
Talking to the baby
(Ashton's POV)"Just be with her, you've got a big week ahead of you." John says in my ear, speaking hush as the guys circle around us. He pats my back and gives me his signature smile. Thank god for that smile.
I run my hands through my hair and grab my duffle bag, throwing it over my shoulder. These are the last few moments I'll be in this practice room for a while, and although I'll miss it, there is nothing stopping me from abandoning it and staying with her.
"You nervous?" Luke asks, a supportive touch on my shoulder.
I nodded. Was I fückíng nervous? My heart has been nonstop pulsating against my chest for the last eight and a half months.
"You're gonna do great, man." I really hope so. The last thing I wanted to do was let her down, let our baby down. "You were born to be a dad, Ash. You are going to be the best."

The drive home was the moment everything sunk in. I have been leaving this life for almost nine months and it hasn't ever felt this real until now. My hands clench against the steering wheel and I look to the passenger seat, imagining her sitting there. Her hand would rest on her "basketball-shaped stomach" as she calls it. She'd be looking out the window, rubbing her soft fingers around the fabric of her maternity top.
"What about a grayish blue?" That was a reoccurring conversation; the color of the babies room. When we found out we were having a little girl, she immediately got stressed over the paint colors. Trying to suggest an easy solution, is said pink.
Her eyes went wide, her mouth gaping. "We will not be subjecting this baby to gender roles." She joked, pushing at my shoulder playfully.
"I like gray blue." Was all I said, watching as her smile left crinkles at the corner of her glistening eyes. That was enough to set her off.
"We can do all white furniture, and we can get one of the cool rocking chairs. No tacky themes though." She was constantly going on and on about the room. It was her own way to deal with her nerves so I let her battle with me about paint swatches and diaper changing stations.
Smiling at the memory of her and her pregnant tummy sitting in the middle of the nursery, countless paint swatches taped to the walls. She would furrow her brow, sighing heavily and calling out to me when she was stuck between Robins Egg Blue and Silver Skate.
"Which on do you like?" she'd pout up at me. I'd sit behind her, wrap my arms around her and rest my head on her shoulder.
"Which ever one you want, babe."
"But I don't know which one I want. Which one do you like?" I had no idea which one I preferred. The only opinion that I cared about was hers, and hers.
"Let's see which one the baby likes." I leaned my head down, lips hovering over her stomach which shook lightly as she laughed above me.
Her hands ran through my hair and down the back of my neck soothingly as mine caressed our baby through her stomach. "Hello baby girl, it's your daddy here. Your mommy is going crazy over the color of your room, better get used to it because she is always going crazy over something. " She tugs on my hair playfully.
"Shut up." She whispered.
"So I guess I'm here to ask your opinion, being that it is your room. Robins Egg Blue?" My hand rubs around, trying to feel for the baby. After feeling only her steady breathing and smooth skin, I try again. "Mm, I guess that's not the one."
"Okay baby, this is the last one we've got, hopefully you like it or we will have to go shopping again." I brush my lips against her stomach and she smiles down at me. "Silver Skate?" Her hand joins mine on her stomach, feeling for the babies touch.
Nothing.
She frowns at me and I take it as my duty to scoop her up into my arms. She sits in my lap as I sit cross cross on the soft white rug.
"She doesn't like any of the colors." My girl, will my first girl, whines, her head barring itself in my neck.
"It's okay, baby, she'll love whatever you pick." I sooth her, kissing her forehead as I rock her back and forth.
"How do you know?"
"Because you picked it. And you're going to be the best mommy." My voice drops down to a whisper and I cup her face. Her eyes are glossed over, delicately searching my face.
"And you're going to be the most amazing dad...isn't that right princess?" She directs her voice towards the bundle we created and grabs my hand, placing it on her stomach.
"I love you, baby." Just as I kiss her nose, I feel a tiny pressure against the palm of my hand. My eyes dart open and I look down at her stomach. "Was that-?"
"Mhm. That was the baby." She giggles, wrapping her arm around my back as I overly inspect her stomach.
"Hello princess, glad you're awake." The baby kicks again with all her tiny might.
"She likes your voice, Ash..." Her lips touch my cheek lightly, "I love you too babe."
At the sound of her voice, the baby shows us just how strong it's tiny bones are.
"Seems to like yours too."
AN: I'm emotional.
