By the look on my mom’s face, I knew I caught her off guard.

“But Sadie, I thought you wanted to stay in state? Ever since you were in sixth grade UW-Eau Claire has been your college of choice. You graduate in a few months, this is a huge change.” She said with a stutter.

“Well, I thought I did. I guess I didn’t look at all my options. I mean, we’ve got some family in North Carolina…and I’ll come home winter and spring break! And Mom, that was sixth grade. My preferences have changed.” I didn’t want to make it seem like I was leaving her, but I know deep down that’s what she’s thinking.

“I’m not choosing this college because it’s away from home. It just feels right. I feel like I belong there.”

“Well, it’s up to you. Are you sure you want to go so far? What about Gage? You guys will be so far away. And staying in his home town will make things so much easier on you guys."

With a chuckle I say, “He’s going to be in California anyways. We’ll be fine. Sure, we’ll be on complete opposites of the country, but I believe we’ll make it. He wants me to go where I want, and he supports me.  Speaking of Gage, there’s something I’ve wanted to tell you.”

Right away I could sense panic. Knowing my mom, she thought of the worst thing possible. She’s pregnant. “No mom, I’m not pregnant. Gage and I have been dating for a little over a year now, as you know,” She slowly smiled and nodded, “And... I love him.” As of now my cheeks turned bright red and butterflies filled my stomach. Telling my mom how I feel about Gage has always been hard. But, I figured it was time to let it out. I start fidgeting with my hands and she starts smiling and says, “A long distance relationship isn’t very ideal. Remember you picked it.” Over time, I’ve heard that line while talking about Gage too many times to count. I close my eyes as anger builds up. My heart beat is so loud I hear it in my ears. I take a deep breath and say,

“Mom, listen to me! He’s the one!”
