Demi's POV
It had been several days since we last saw nick, but he always texts to make sure everything is going okay. Nothing has gotten worse, but they haven't exactly gotten better either. Nick just always reminds me that recovery is slow. I had to trust him on this.
It was laundry day, and I was wanting to get it done as soon as possible. Kenzie was in the shower, which usually takes her quite a bit of time, so I just wet into her room to get her laundry basket. As always, I checked every pocket. I was terrified at what I found.
Kenzie's POV
Once I was out of the shower, I got dressed for the day. We weren't going to go out or doing anything, so I just put on some comfortable sweats and a regular t-shirt. Like usual, I checked to make sure I had all of my blades. I'm terrified Mom will end up finding one. I checked in all the usual places, but one was missing. I looked everywhere. I searched my whole room, anywhere it could be. Then I remembered that I had stuck one in my pocket the night before. We had to make a quick errand, and I felt the need to be prepared. But my laundry basket was gone. I put my pants from yesterday in that basket, and Mom must have taken it.
I felt my face start to get red as my heart beat picked up its pace.
No no no she can't find it!
I ran downstairs with the small hope that she hadn't checked the pockets yet, but I was wrong. Everything was already sorted out. Mom was in another room, so I ran to the pile that had my pants in it. The pockets were empty.
I felt my breathing hitch.
No, stay calm.
I ha to tell myself that maybe, just maybe if I stay calm, she'll believe me when I tell her it's not mine.
I walked into the kitchen and started pouring myself a bowl of cereal. I knew Mom was going to make me eat something this morning, and I wanted to be on her good side as much as possible at the moment.
I sat down at the table just as Mom walked in.
"I thought I heard you out here," she said. She smiled at the bowl of cereal. "I think I'll join you." I weakly smiled back at her, too nervous to speak. I guess she sensed my tension, because when she sat down with her bowl, she asked, "Are you alright?" I just nodded. "Are you sure? You seem a little tense?" I didn't respond. I was still too nervous to speak. "Is there something I should know?" She asked. I shook my head. "Nothing you're trying to hide?"
I knew she had found it. I looked up at her, and she had a stern look on her face, the one she always gives me when she tries to get me to confess about something. I'm pretty sure all mothers have one.
Still, I shook my head in response to her question.
With a sigh, she set the metal piece down on the table between us. I just stared at it for a second.
"Where did that come from?" I finally asked.
"You tell me," Mom challenged.
"You're the one that found it," I said.
"Kenzie, I'm not going to argue with you about this. I know it's yours."
She was right. There was no point in arguing with her. She was going to get the truth out anyways. All she had to do was tell me to let her see my leg.
I didn't dare make eye contact with her.
"Kenzie," she sighed. "I'm not mad." I could feel the tears form in my eyes. "I'm just sad," she continued. It didn't make me feel any better. I bit my lip, trying to keep the tears from falling, but it didn't work. One tear fell, and I hid my face from her.
"Don't worry," Mom told me as I felt her arms wrap around me. "Relapse happens. It isn't unusual." I didn't respond. Instead, I continued to try to cover my face as my tears fell silently.
I don't think I've ever hated myself more than this moment.
Uh-Oh
Another quick update because I start school again tomorrow, and I don't know wen I'll have time to update again.
Just to let you know, the end is coming very soon. I know I've said this before, but it's getting closer.
(I have a threatre competition on Wednesday, I'm so nervous!!)
