There is a misconception that these gifts are only for Apostles, Evangelists or Prophets and not for the common church going Christian. The truth is every saved believer can operate in all of these gifts when required. A few of them however are given to them as a mantle or office that they can exercise more fluently compared to the others.
Every believer is blessed with gifts and its more than one gift. It is good to ask God for specific gifts but it is more important to identify and use what He has already given you. The Gifts or manifestations of the Holy Spirit have great power to influence people and grow churches. God specifically instructs His children to desire and cherish spiritual gifts.
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit ...- 1 Corinthians 14:1
The best way to know what your gifting is would be, just ask the Holy Spirit, he will show you. Also remember if you strongly desire a specific gift he will likely give you that gift.
Many times these gifts do not operate singularly, at times you may receive prophecy along with a word of wisdom on how to deliver this prophecy or you may receive a discernment and wisdom on what to do with this discernment which may eventually leads to a healing. Do not get tied down by the names of the gifts, allow the Holy Spirit to flow through you and you will be amazed with the giftings you have.
The way the gifts flow out of you are specific to each gift. It is important to understand that the way God activates these gifts is unique to each person. Some people feel fire in their bones, others feel a divine love towards a person which strongly pulls them closer to that person and when they respond a gifting is activated. People also feel strong emotions like compassion or deep sorrow towards someone which has no natural cause. There is no exact formula for this to happen, it is very specific to you, it is important that you spend time with God to understand how He communicates with you.

This is a story of a young man. He always knew deep down that there was more to the world than what meets the eye but was not sure where to find answers. The last place he expected to find the truth was the Bible.
He realized that almost all supernatural activity we see today is demonic and wanted to understand the roots and causes behind them. Later he was filled with the Holy Spirit and when he read about the gifts of the Holy Spirit he instantly saw the potential in the Gift of Discernment. He knew that this was one gift he wanted at all costs.
The Holy Spirit gave him the gift of Discernment of Spirits and also the Gifts of Healing, he got more than what he asked for. Some time later he was also blessed with the gift of Prophecy. The Holy Spirit is not some impersonal force, he is intimately connected to you and listens to you and knows your desires. If they are beneficial and you are sincerely, he grants them to you.
