His father's behavior was only part of his secret.

At the very moment when the boy thought he was escaping for good, his father sat down with a bottle of booze in front of his mansion's most expensive fireplace.

The nightly booze (or two) was typical for the father. But what wasn't typical were the files strewn out in front of him:  pictures, birth certificate, and social security card of his only son.

"I had to do it," the son's father murmurs as he slowly picks up the items one-by-one. "It's for the boy's own good."

And with that he thrusts the pictures into the fire, never to be seen again.
