"Want a cookie?" I held out a homemade chocolate chip cookie in front of me, waiting for Ellie to respond.
"Not hungry." Ellie turned in her chair and continued to read.
"Well, okay. Do you want me to leave?"
"Yeah."
I walked away from Ellie, my head hung low in failure. I couldn't even make her smile for more than a day. I walked outside of the library and sat on one of the benches, looking at the cookie in my hands.
"I'm so, so sorry for you, Ellie." I whispered to myself, and the words were carried away by the wind.
