Tears shed for another person are not a sign of weakness. They are a sign of a pure heart.

~José N. Harris

Devin's POV

"I'm getting a bit tired," Cecilia said as she looked at the room filled with chatting people. She averted her gaze from them and looked back at me. "Can we go now? I don't think you will see her again and if you were I don't think she would want to see you anyway."

I gave a scowl at her blunt remark and pulled a straight face. " I never said anything about looking for her and yes let's leave."

The two of us walked out of the hotel and to the valet to get my car. As we got into it Cecilla started talking about how the event was.

"I cannot believe Angela showed up with that very young man after just announcing her divorce with Andrew. I now think the rumors about her cheating on poor Andrew are true. No one deserves to be treated like that in a marriage." Cecilia took a slight glance towards me as she spoke her last sentence and realizing what she had just said she frowned a tad.

"You were such a jerk to her, weren't you? I never personally met her but now that I have finally seen her I curse the day she ever met you. You ruined her life. You played her as if she were an instrument and I have seen no resentment on your face. Devin Maker, you are a grade 'a' jerk."

Her words had not fabricated anger in me as for she had always called me a jerk since we were little. Cecilia had always been an outspoke girl and, at times, that trait did not work out in everybody's way, as for she could be a bit harsh with what she said.

I did not respond to her and just continued to drive her back home.

She was visiting for the summer from her boarding school in Paris. Our parents had sent her off when she had been acting up at home, by going to parties and coming home late at night. They had had enough when she was sent to the hospital and almost died from alcohol poisoning. I had told them it was just a phase she was going through in her teen years, but nothing stopped them from sending her off. Now she was eighteen and in her last year of school.

"Devin, stop the car. Stop the car!" Cecilia's screaming brought me back into reality and I automatically stepped on the brake pedal. She opened the door and burst out of the car. I looked to where she was running too and my eyes widened as I saw a car upside down and another one crashed close by.

I got out of the car and rushed towards Cecilia.

"Get away from there Cece!" When I reached her I grabbed her and stopped her from getting any closer to the car that could catch on flames any second.

"There is someone in there Devin! You can't just leave them there!" She screamed.

"Your right but you will not risk your life as well. Call 911 and I will go see if I can get them out." She nodded her head and rushed back to the car to get her phone.

I walked over first to the car upside down and knelt to get a better look inside from the broken window. A female was the first thing that I saw. Her slim body was being held by the seatbelt. Her eyes were closed and her face was all scratched up and bleeding.

I pushed myself inside to click her seatbelt off and as I did so I held her body that laid upside down. The belt unbuckled and her body fell into my arms. With my force, I got the both of us out and onto the street, only then did I recognize the person in was holding.

"Samantha?" The light cast on her face and her eyes slowly opened to reveal her blue orbs."Samantha," I repeated again. Her eyes returned to being closed and I lifted her of my lap and laid her on the ground.

"Devin!" Cecilia called out as she ran back to where Samantha and I were at. When she noticed who it was that was on the floor she fell to her knees and looked at the face of the woman I had once been married to. A tear ran down her face as she leaned down and buried her into a hug.

"Check her pulse," she said and I did as told. In the distance, I could hear the ambulance sirens going off.

"It's slow," was all I managed to say.

Before I could do anything else the ambulance was already coming to a halt near us and soon the paramedics were lifting Samantha's body up onto a gurney.

"Sir, I'm going to need to ask you a few questions," said a nearby police officer. I agreed and saw as Samantha's body was taken to the back of the ambulance.

...

My eyes struggled to stay open. In the background, I could hear the constant beeping. It filled the room and for a moment I thought myself a madman hearing things until I opened my eyes and noticed where I sat.

The room was dimly lit by a single table lamp. The small amount of light that cast made me able to see the scratched up face that belonged to Samantha. Her plump lips held dried up blood from the cut she had on her upper lip. A bandage laid peacefully on her forehead where I knew a nasty scar was soon to be left.

I stood up from the now uncomfortable chair and went to where her lifeless body laid. Many tubes were connected to her and I prayed that she would soon wake up.

A small knock on the door came before Cecilia walked in with two cups in her hand.

"Hey, I thought you might need this." She handed me the cup that contained hot coffee and I gladly accepted.

"Her mom just called me saying she will be back in a bit with her stuff and her friends went to get some rest. Devin you should go get some rest too. You have been here all night. Her parents will be here soon so it's not like she will be all alone. Also, do you really think it best that you be the first face she sees when she wakes up? You weren't the best thing that happened to her Devin and I think you should just let her have her space."

Cecilia was right. If Samantha saw me here she would not be all rainbows and unicorns about my presence. We had left off on not so good terms and the most rational action to do at that moment was leave.

"You are right. I shouldn't worsen her mood by being here."

I gathered my belongings and left the hospital with Cecilia in tow. I would call her mother and ask about her well-being later.
