Nathan was one of the top researchers under Giovanni's original Team Rocket. Ever since he was a child, along with biologist Maxwell Graves, he was fascinated by the way creatures work, so he decided to study this, just like Maxwell, at a newly-created university stationed in Goldenrod City called Pokemon Tech. However, unlike his childhood friend, he spent more time bonding with Pokemon than learning how their innards functioned. This pushes him to invent the Life Tether, a device that accelerates the rate at which humans and Pokemon bond. It was then that Giovanni began work on his Hybrid Experiment, which Nathan took a great interest in- culminating in his betrayal of his leader and rescuing of a certain Pokemon that would change his life forever.
