I told Chance the truth. He made me trust him with his actions and how he'd just tell me whatever was on his mind.
We were sitting at one of the bonfires going, making s'mores.
"So, you're a sophomore?" He assured looking at his marshmallow on the stick.
"Yeah"
"I remember being a sophomore, it was a dark time" he sighed.
I looked at him, "Why? What happened?" I asked.
"Well, you see, I was pretty depressed after we had moved here because my mom and dad were always working and my older sister was always out so I was always alone" he looked at me and kept going, "I didn't feel needed, I thought about committing suicide a couple times but never actually thought of doing it, so instead of actually killing myself right away, I thought I would take pills"
"It started off with a couple of benadryl's, then that turned into an addiction, later I got in with the not so popular crowd of the school, we'd try unisoms, musinex, zanax, aderal, and anything that would make me feel numb" he shrugged.
"So, how did you stop?" I asked him.
"Well, my older sister knew what was happening and told both of my parents, afterwards, they actually cared after months of doing it, they took me to a counselor, and checked me into a mental hospital, from there on I met some pretty cool people who helped me through it, and the surprising thing is that Darren was one of them"
I snapped my head to Chance, "Did you say Darren was one of them? Does that mean he was in the-"
"Mental hospital? Yeah, he had to volunteer for support group his mom made him go to" he looked back at me.
"You know, ever since you told him about" he looked at my stomach, "he's stopped using girls like he use to"
"I don't believe that" I shook my head and chuckled.
"Have you seen that girl he was talking to?"
"Yeah, Desiree? Don't worry, they're just childhood friends, plus she's gay"
"Oh" I said awkwardly.
I heard the chattering of other people around us.
"Chance!" I jumped and looked to see Darren's head between us.
They both laughed and he sat next to me.
"What were you guys talking about?" He asked.
"Stuff" I smiled.
He nodded and grabbed the bag of marshmallows.
It was very peaceful and warm until a guy got stood up and yelled, "Time to get this party started!"
Everyone else cheered as he brought out beer.
I looked at Darren.
"Is this a big party?" I asked.
"Erm, no"
"Hey Chance?" I looked over at Chance.
He looked back at me, "is this a party?" I asked.
He started smiling, "Only the biggest party you'll ever be at" and with that he left.
I glared back at Darren, "You took me to a party?"
"Well, I wanted to come and my mom said we needed to spend time with each other"
"Fine, but if I smell alcohol on your breath then I will take your car keys and leave"
"Woah, calm down, I'm not dumb enough to drive while intoxicated" his eyebrows furrowed.
"I know, I'm just saying" I smiled sweetly and left.
I walked to the water and stared off into the distance.
I touched my stomach, this is really happening. I have a little human growing inside me.
"Hey" someone stood next to me.
"Hey" I said unsure.
This person dressed like a tomboy but had feminine features, and a feminine voice.
"So you showed up with Darren?" They looked back at the bonfire.
"Yeah" I trailed off.
"So are you guys like a , thing?"she asked.
"Uh, no, it's actually really complicated"
"Ahh, I was thinking to myself, maybe he finally settled down, but now not so much"
I nodded at her, "So... Who are you?" I asked.
"My name is Alexandra, but call me Alex" Alex smiled.
"I'm Maisie" I smiled back.
Alex had light brown skin and curly short hair hair with a white bandana she wore as a headband.
"So Maisie, I just moved here not so long ago and my cousin made me come, but do you mind if I hang out with you?" Alex asked.
"I don't mind, I actually didn't know this was a party" I laughed.
"Same, my mom made me go out and I quote, 'to make some friends', so here I am"
Alex and I walked around, just talking about simple things like the people around here.
I found Darren talking to his buddies, which were in fact even more players of the school.
"Hey, Maisie, I got to go my cousin is leaving" Alex waved and left.
I approached Darren to hear their conversation of how one of his friends gossiping about a girl and how many times she let somebody get in her pants.
I checked my phone. It was only ten and Darren said this thing goes on until like, midnight.
I wandered around aimlessly bumping into a few girls who glared at me.
I finally decided to sit at one of the bonfires. The ocean made me feel cold and the fire was warming me.
Soon, I started feeling tired. I started yawning and tried to keep myself awake by looking around me.
"You look tired" I heard a voice say to my side.
I looked at Chance and nodded.
"I'll go find Darren" I nodded and watched him walk away.
My eyes were getting heavier and heavier.
"Look, Darren, just come back and get Maisie, she's literally sleeping" I opened my eyes and saw Chance standing in front of me.
"What?!" He whispered yelled.
"Bro, seriously just come- ew, fuck you Darren not like that" Chance rolled his eyes, making me laugh.
"Okay, yeah whatever" he hung up and looked at me, "we're suppose to meet him at the gas station"
He helped me up and started to leading the way through the people.
I dragged my feet feeling completely exhausted.
The last thing I remember before falling asleep was Chance telling me how Darren was the same old Darren.
I'm not surprised.
