Eliot Peterson, a sophomore in high school, finds her life difficult in many ways. Her name is a problem too, by being teased of being odd and boy-like. Her parents are divorced and live in different states, and her single best friend just moved away to South Dakota.
She struggles to find somebody to talk to, or even to find a friend. Painting and running is her life, and she isn't about to let her step-mother get in the way of that. Everybody pushes her to be more girly, by painting her walls pink or having a boyfriend. But she doesn't want any of those things.
Too bad her heart doesn't listen to her head.
