Thirteen inches: again this is an unlucky number. Amelia's wand never really does much for her and she chooses not to rely on it's power for her own magical purposes. When she does, things occasionally don't work out.
Arbutus wood: arbutus trees are these beautiful red trees only found along the northern west coast of North America. When Amelia goes back to her home (for those of you who have read way further you know I'm not talking about the place her mother lives) she feels like she belongs most on the west coast.
Unicorn hair: unicorns are symbols of purity and innocence. These aspects are within Amelia and are things she struggles with as the books get darker. The unicorn hair is symbolic of Amelia's innocence.
