What was wrong with me?

In what world could I ever out run a freaking car?

When Lucy continued driving off into the night, Isaac and I were left standing in the middle of the road. My friend was completely out of breath from the running, but I was mostly struck by the realization of this: Lucy wanted nothing to do with me.

Isaac, still breathless, came up from behind me and rested his hand on my shoulder. He took in a deep breath and said, "Sorry, man."

"No, don't be sorry," I muttered, still looking down the road. "You're not the one who drove away."
