 Chapter 16

 Katheren:

Some was following me, not a spell but a person. I could feel their magical aura as I went shopping at some store in Wyoming. I hadn’t felt any really magical presence since last month when someone was tracing me with that spell. I’d learned a lot more since then.

That presence was still there as I walked on to the next store at the strip mall. I stopped, annoyed, maybe they would just make my job easier and just walk up to me instead of making me track them with my magic.

The witch made it easy. “Katheren! Wait!”

I turned towards the voice, it was familiar. A petit blonde with deep brown eyes came running up to me.

She grinned. “I’ve been trying to catch up with you for a few minutes. I’m Delilah Dyce, we met back at your grandmother’s house over the summer.” She held out her hand.

I was reluctant to take it, I had just seen her cousin, Samson, recently, less than two months ago, and it seem conspicuous that I would see her suddenly when I wasn’t exactly broadcasting my position. “Hello, Delilah.”

She continued on as if she didn’t notice my hesitation. “It’s just so weird to see you here. I’m visiting a friend and I planned on leaving in a few days, I didn’t expect to see you so far away from California. My cousin, Samson, told me that you were travelling, but I never thought that you would take such a long trip. Why aren’t you with your fiancé, or are you married now?”

“We aren’t. The relationship was going a little too fast so we decided to take it a little slower until we were both sure that that was what we wanted.” Okay, so that wasn’t even close, but she didn’t need to know that.

Her eyes widened. “Oh my god, I am so sorry. You two just looked so… perfect together.”

“Mhm.” My suspicions of the girl made this conversation bad enough but this topic was making it unbearable.

“Look. Since you don’t know any one and I just couldn’t live with myself if I thought you were home alone brooding when I could have done something, would you mind coming to diner with me tomorrow night? Mrs. Page, your grandmother, had told me some things that youo might want to know if you haven’t talked to her lately.”

Yes, I would mind, but I needed some information on some things so this might be the best way to get them. “That would be fine. Where and what time?”

She told me about some diner on the edge of town, I didn’t really remember the name but I remembered the street. She smiled again. “See you at seven.”

             “See you,” I repeated.

I wasn’t all that surprised when I got back to my motel room and Aikaterine was waiting there without me even summoning her. “What did I do wrong this time?” I asked as I set down my bags on the bed and began putting everything in its correct place.

“Why did you accept that girl’s invitation? You don’t either have the time or safety. She could tell anyone where you are.”

I rolled my eyes. “I know enough by now that I don’t need to spend my every waking minute practicing my magic and I plan on leaving after I meet with her.”
